The desired behaviour is where the image is rendered on the same page with text and other information presented in situ.

True, but it's easy enough to hit the back button after you've viewed it. And certainly no more difficult than opening and closing a spoiler. Especially as you usually still have to use view image / open image in new tab or similar once you gave opened the spoiler to view a larger image properly.
