It's a decoy seal, surely? You can see the line it's attached to being yanked about in the video.

What a dikwad if it is. Leave the animal to do it's thing in it's environment.

It's not as if we hang lures in front of other kinds of fish.

Any naturalist will tell you rare apex predators are vital to an ecosystem and should be left alone.

It's from Steve Irwin school of making yourself famous at the expensive of the animal's welfare.

Stingrays are rare apex predators?

That's a pretty uneducated opinion on Steve Irwin.

Have you guys not seen that Discovery channel prog about the sharks leaping out of the water (South Africa somewhere)? They love it. They drag a decoy seal behind a boat full of tourists just so they can see the sharks breaching.

Oh, and don't be bad-mouthing Steve Irwin. That's not a good look.

Are you sure you don't mean "any naturist"? They tend to be very vocal about leaving apex predators completely alone, as extra wobbly bits of human meat flapping about in the breeze/ocean swells are quite the draw to such beasts.

Naturalists, on the other hand, will tell you that it's vital that we find out as much as possible about rare apex predators, and non-damaging (or even minimal-damaging) research methods and interventions are often necessary.

Having met the man, I can confirm Steve Irwin was a knob-end though.

This video is over 30 years old. Many people assumed it was a spoof, perhaps a comedy-show sketch. No-one knew the truth...

The reason apex predators should be left alone is because they will eat you. Ask this naturalist:

Can't remember the name of the guy but the story is all about statistical sampling bias. Returning aircraft during WW2 suffered anti-aircraft damage predominantly in these areas. The guy concerned recognised that this was not indicating inherent weakness as these aircraft were making it back. Those that failed to return must have been hit and failed in the cleaner areas. So these damage spots showed the non-critical parts of the aircraft or those parts that were inherently robust. Something like that...

Wasn't it also that for the first part of the war, the ground crews spent a lot of time strengthening and protecting those areas, before they realised that they should have been reinforcing the areas where they weren't seeing holes in the returning planes.
