You seem to be hounding Jake off the bored again. He he given Matt the migrant a pathway to redemption and the ball is in his court now.

Yeah if Mat had any guts he'd apologise. I expect that some Japanese Senasei has drummed the concept of saving face into him though, while wearing jim-jams and Zorroing around a church hall. Having said that, if Mat wants to take the opportunity of checking out any time he likes then he should keep schtum.

I believe that the threat of legal action might have something to do with it. Any apology could be construed as admission of guilt. You just don't know what Jake is capable of.

That justifies the action. Sure, the post wasn't 100% correct but the grown up thing to do was to correct it rather than add to the myth.

If he wants to stay then apologise - he doesn't have to mean it. I assume the defamation business is a joke. No one in the whole history of the world would publicise the fact that they effectively got someone sacked in such a way, while taking someone to court for hurty things said on the internet.

I have no knowledge of the legality involved but one should never make a threat that involves the courts unless you mean it. Which could imply that either Jake is bluffing or has taken legal advice. Would be interesting to see how this developed. I suspect both are strong willed

Afraid it would be laughed out of court
Indeed.

While I haven't actually seen the exchange that Aussie Jim depicts, I am aware of the exchange on the Rugby Escapegoats fb page and it looks as though it may be genuine.

I would say that there are plenty of witnesses on here who remember what actually happened (despite two bored wipes).

Honestly this place at times.. A lot of us have been here well over 10 years, posted literally tens of thousands of times, spent days and days on here and yet are still incredulous at what happens and how seriously some people take it.

Just how does someone enforce a cease and desist action against a pseudonym ensconced in another country?

And how do you defame an internet username?

What actual concrete "loss" in reputation could be claimed for an internet username on minor rugby website?

The internet user-name bit isn't really relevant, as long as you can identify who someone is in reality and Jake's identity is known.

As far as loss, while it's probably minimal I don't it would be that hard to prove a potential loss if the allegation is false*. He's a journo who does work for PR from time to time doesn't he?

Don't get me wrong, it's a huge over-reaction but some elements of it are sound.

*while it may not be true, given the difference between what Matt said and what others have said actually happened is actually fairly minimal, I doubt he could really show his reputation was harmed.

It will come as no surprise to anyone that Jake is full of shit when he suggests that he ever seriously considered taking any sort of legal action over this.

Despite the fact he's not very bright and has the self-awareness of a shrub, even dimmest bulb would understand how ruinous such an action would be to the remaining shreds of his reputation.

A first year psychology student could see that email (which is indeed genuine) for what it is - a disastrous doubling down in an effort to extort an undue apology from Mat, which Jake desperately hopes might vindicate him in the eyes of a few posters.

The 'cease and desist' bullshit is just Jake's way of letting people know how weally weally angry he is, in order to a) validate his latest stupidity and b) make himself the victim.

If we are to crowdfund anything it should be Jake's legal costs, not Mat's. Not because we want to see Mat prosecuted, but because the inevitable outcome - if we could encourage him to actually follow through on his pathetic threat - would be Jake's public humiliation, and almost certainly the end not only of his modding responsibilities but any relationship with Planet Rugby.

I'll happily throw in the first hundred dollars.

Anyone who had to remove their eyeballs with the nearest spoon after reading 'Dave Warner's Ashes Diary' will know that Jake's sense of humour is insufficient to such a task.

It might be minor now, but once it's been at the front of growing the game globally (but only by helping UK organisations) then it'll be huge!!
