The SH dont have any competition close to your 6 nations u20s. Massive advantage to you.

Posters like Handyman dont have a clue. They think the SH laaities just need to pitch up and run over the NH teams. That days are long gone. Look like Ireland are the team to beat this year.

Cape Town - Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux on Friday named a 30-member squad featuring six capped World Rugby U20 Championship players to tour Tbilisi, Georgia, from November 27 to December 5, as part of the team's preparations for the 2020 season.

The tour, which will feature matches against the Georgia Under-19 team on December 2, and December 5, will replace the Under-18 and Under-19 assessment camps usually hosted by the Junior Springbok coaching staff with an eye on the selection of the Junior Springbok squad for the World Rugby U20 Championship.

Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), Emile van Heerden (lock), Celimpilo Gumede (looseforward), Zwelendaba Mnombo (centre), Sibusiso Sangweni (flanker) and Thabiso Mdletshe (prop) are the six players who represented the Junior Springboks in the World Rugby U20 Championship in Rosario, Argentina, earlier this year.

The squad includes another 11 players who were members of the SA Schools team that participated in the 2018 Under-18 International Series in the Western Cape against Wales, France and England.

They are Adrian Alberts (lock) and Muzi Manyike (centre) - who were captain and vice-captain respectively - Stravino Jacobs (winger), Dewald Donald (prop), Hanro Jacobs (prop), Lunga Ncube (lock), Evan Roos (looseforward), Rynhardt Jonker (centre), JJ Kotze (hooker), Juan Mostert (flyhalf) and Thomas Bursey (scrumhalf).

"We decided to replace the U18 and U19 assessment camps with a combined SA U19 squad that will travel to Georgia and play two matches against their national side," said Roux. "So this will serve as a fantastic opportunity for these players to prove themselves at this level.

"This tour is essentially the springboard for our Junior Springbok programme for 2020.

"That said, there will be opportunities for players who are not in this group to stake a claim a claim for places in the Junior Springbok squad next year, and over and above this, we will once again host the SA Rugby Academy programme, so while this is a good opportunity for these players, they are by no means the only ones we are looking at."

Roux emphasised the importance of good planning to give the SAU20's the best possible chance to lift the World Rugby U20 Championship trophy next year, and said: "This tour is part of our planning for the SAU20's, and the fact that this is the first time we select a national U19 team since 2007 makes it particularly exciting.

"What is really nice about this tour is that it will expose the players to a higher level of rugby, so we can see if they are able to make their presence felt at this level, and we are pleased to see players from the Valke and Leopards, which are regarded as smaller unions, in the fold."

The squad will gather at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport on Sunday, November 24, to begin their preparations for the tour.

Roux satisfied as SA U19s grind out a win against Georgia
Cape Town - Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux expressed his satisfaction as the SA U19s ground out a morale-boosting 28-21 victory in a hard-fought and physical encounter against Georgia at the Shevardeni Rugby Stadium in Tbilisi on Monday, in what marked the first of two matches between the teams in the country’s capital.

Making the victory even more rewarding was the fact that the South Africans received three yellow cards in the match, which saw them play with 14 men for 30 of the 80 minutes.

The first half was hard-fought as both teams threw everything at one another on attack and stood firm on defence, but Georgia’s two penalty goals and two tries – one of which was converted – to only two converted tries by the SA U19s, allowed the home side to sneak into an 18-14 lead shortly before halftime.

Roux’s charges hit back after the break to add two converted tries, taking their tally in the match to four, while they limited the hosts to one penalty goal.

“It was a tough game, especially in the windy and cold conditions, which the players are not used to,” said Roux. “But our defence held well, and we managed to keep them out over several phases.

“That said, the score wasn’t the most important aspect of the match for us, it was more the opportunity to assess the players and to get to know them better under tough circumstances. And it certainly says a lot about their character.”

With a second match-up lined up against Georgia on Thursday, Roux said: “The areas we need to work on going forward are our discipline – we cannot afford to get three yellow cards – and our penalty count, as we conceded almost 15 penalties in the match.

“But this is a learning process. Most players met one another for the first time last week Monday, and it is pleasing to see how things are coming together.”

Roux added: “With regards to injuries, it doesn’t look like we have any serious concerns, but we will look to make a few changes for the next match.”

The SA U19s showed their intent from the outset as they worked their way close to the tryline twice early on, and their efforts finally paid off less then 10 minutes into the match with Werner Gouws (flanker) touching down after good phases and patience on attack. Scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse added the conversion to push them 7-0 ahead.

The team was dealt a double blow as Hendrikse received a yellow card for cynical play at a ruck, and Dewald Donald (prop) was sent to the sin bin next in the 18th and 29th minute respectively. The hosts capitalised on this with two penalty goals by Lasha Lomidze to reduce their deficit to 7-6.

The SA U19s hit back with Zwelendaba Mnombo (centre) scoring their second try in the 32nd minute despite being reduced to 14 men, and yet again Hendrikse’s conversion was successful.

The team, however, let their lead slip as Georgia fought back strongly in the dying minutes, which saw Saba Kuratashvili (hooker) and Giorgi Margaltadze (scrumhalf) score back-to-back tries from some enterprising attacking play, which nudged them into a 18-14 halftime lead.

The visitors started the second half on a disappointing note with Stravino Jacobs (winger) receiving a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, and Lomidze converted this opportunity into points by slotting over his third penalty goal for a 21-14 lead.

The SA U19s struck back in the 56th minute with a try by captain and hooker, JJ Kotze, compliments of a strong rolling maul, and the conversion by Juan Mostert (flyhalf), allowed them to level the scores.

Bernard van der Linde added the team’s fourth try in the 57th minute thanks to a sniping run and the conversion pushed them 28-21 ahead with a little over 10 minutes to play.

Georgia tried hard to force their way back into the game in the remaining minutes, but the visitors’ solid defence shut them out, and allowed them to seal the seven-point victory.

Junior Boks secure second straight win on Georgian tour

Cape Town - Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux was pleased with the outcomes achieved as the SA Under-19 team wrapped up their two-match tour to Georgia with a 40-33 victory against the hosts at the Shevardeni Rugby Stadium in Tbilisi on Thursday.

The team won their first match 28-21 at the same venue, and they were once again tested to the limit by a determined Georgian outfit.

The SA U19s dominated the first half and their efforts paid off as they outscored the hosts four tries to one – which featured a brace by Muzi Manyike (fullback) – for an encouraging 26-12 halftime lead.

They added two tries in the second half, taking their tally in the match to six, but they conceded three after the break, which saw Georgia suffer a narrow seven-point defeat.

“It was a successful tour and we got to see exactly what we wanted to against quality opposition,” said Roux.

“I thought we started this match better than the first one, and we were unlucky not to have scored two or three more tries in the first half.

“We also made several changes throughout the match to give everyone a chance to play, and that disrupted the momentum a little. But that was the reason for the tour – to give everyone an opportunity and to see what they are capable of in tough circumstances.”

Roux added that although they won both matches, he attached no significance to the scoreboard: “We are currently in our off-season, while they are in the middle of their season, so in terms of our conditioning we are not where we should be, but that is understandable.

“In terms of the scoreboard, it is not something we look at. The fact that they got a red card and we allowed them to play on with 15 players to test ourselves certainly had in influence in the result, but the main purpose of this tour was to assess the players, and we are pleased that we achieved that,” he said.

The SA U19s got the match off to a strong start with Manyike scoring back-to-back tries within 10 minutes – the first from a sharp pass out wide and the second from some good running and foot work to force his way over the chalk.

They added their third try soon after compliments of Morne Brandon (flanker), who received a well-timed pass from the base of the ruck at pace, which extended their lead to 19-0.

The SA 19s lost Werner Gouws (No for 10 minutes in the 24th minute after he received a yellow card for a dangerous challenge in a tackle, and the hosts capitalised on that with Levan Kushashvili (winger) touching down in the corner to earn their first points of the match.

This was cancelled out by SA U19 hooker Jason Alexander minutes later as he earned the team’s fourth try.

Georgia were dealt a big blow soon after as Tornike Zakariadze (flanker) was shown red-card for a dangerous charge into a ruck, but bounced back to score a confidence-boosting try on the stroke of halftime compliments of Luka Khekhelashvili (winger), who gathered a fantastic cross kick to enter the break 26-12 down.

The hosts received a yellow card early in second half as Luka Ivanishvili (lock) was sent to the sin bin, and the SA U19s took advantage of this with Stravino Jacobs (winger) scoring their fifth try from a great run at pace to break through a tackle, stretching their lead to 21 points.

They inflicted further damage minutes later with replacement scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse touching down after receiving a smart pass with no defenders in sight, and his conversion inflated their score to 40 points.

Georgia struck back with a try of their own by Ioane Iashaghashvili (lock) thanks to some strong forward play and good patience on attack, and the conversion was successful, which saw them take their score to 19 points.

The SA U19s lost their second player, Hanro Jacobs (prop), to a yellow card soon after, and Georgia took advantage of this with Giorgi Margalitadze (scrumhalf) ripping the ball close to the tryline from a crucial error by the visitors, for their fourth try.

The home side continued fighting until the final whistle, and this determination paid off with another try on the stroke of fulltime from another accurate cross-kick, which Temur Kokhodze (winger), snapped out of the air, and the end result was a 40-33 victory for the SA U19s.
