Until the RC that has just ended, this was the team's "first choice" of Hourcade. To these authorities of the UAR and the head coach, the non-eligibility of Argentine players playing in Europe, is a closed case.

Well, the recap of theis 2016 is harsh at first sight...

A relatively small squad, intensively used both in the Jaguares and Los Pumas. Captain Agustín Creevy tweeted on monday that his annual tally was over 50 flights and 160.000 kms. flown...

UAR'sdecissionl to stop calling overseas players is a long term bet, that on the first year didn't seem to pay off. It's meant that players of the quality of Imhoff, Ayerza, Figallo or Juan Fernandez Lobbe were overlooked, and it's easy to imagine the impact they could've had on this November tour.

Some at home are proposing a change on this self imposed rule, so that players with over a certain amount of caps (50?) can be selected from overseas, eventually, in order to keep experienced players around while building up depth.

The Jaguares were intended as an experimental team for Los Pumas, and they kept on trying to play an expansive brandof rugby in spite of the poor results.

1. The most negative point I see is the poor quality coaching staff: almost completely unexperienced at the elite level for the Jaguares, the same guys are Hourcade's assistants on the Test side. Some huge gaffes like dissolving the sports psychology support team were exposed in the way the players will and concentration seemed to relapse at times...

2. A second huge problem has been ill discipline: the team has seen an inordinate amount of red and yelow cards and has averaged way over 10 penalties against per match.

3. The lack of gameplan variation is another error IMHO. Being fun and enerprising is fine and dandy, but you just can't run everything from everywhere against top opposition. Defenses have adapted to our lack of variation, and we struggled to counter that.

4. Our backline play still seems to be lacking. There's intent, but hardly any flair or variation, and breaks seem to depend on individual touches of class. Also, if your scrummies tend to snipe around the fringes, you have to set support for them. Countless times they've made breaks only to find themselves isolated and tuned over immediately afterwards.

5. Our scrum... I just don't want to go there. It had instants of brillance but we were smashed and penalized off the park on too many matches. Our staff has chosen to play young, mobile props insted of rugged ones, but they seem to spend too many time drilling offloads instead of their scrummaging technique.

6. Finally, our tackling completion rate has been quite poor, amongst the worse on Tier 1 level, which amazes me, but seems to be related with all the defensive positioning issues due to poor coaching...


On the plus side:

1. Our lineout has improved. It didn't use to be reliable, but now it's a good offensive platform and has managed to geta few balls out of almost every opposing team.

2. There seems to be talent in heaps coming out, most notably at the backrow. Isa, Matera, Ortega Desio, Lezana... they are all U-23. There's room for improvement with some of the new kids starting to raise their hand in other positions too.

3. Also the physicality level seems to be getting on a pair with the upper echelon teams. We used to get smashe out of the park only a few years ago, and now, even if sometimes we seem to be unable to cope with the All Blacks, we've been on a par with the rest.

4. There seemed to be some signs of recovery in the scrum during the November tour. Not many, but some.


The prospect seems a tad bleak, though, since all the soundbites coming ou of UAR's management and the teams' coaching staffs point inthe same direction:

"...only minor glitches prevented us from winning more, so we're keeping things alike and wait until our project matures, aiming towards 2019..."

IMHO Isa should earn it by a long distance. He's had a fantastic year at Los Pumas, usually shining in losing efforts... and even though Ferronato's season was a monster one, his achivevments in local amateur rugby can't be put in the same scales with the international scene.

And I'm truly surprised both Imhoff and Cubelli have been ommitted. Imhoff's form for Racing 92 has been outstanding, and Cubelli became quite important in the Brumbies structure...

I have a vague memory of Imhoff messing up at the Olympic 7s, and he plays in Europe so perhaps some politics play a part? i.e. to the loyal domestic players go the spoils.

With regards Cubelli, he has been a bench test player behind Landajo. I thought he was poor against England, Landajo sniping runs would have worried me more.

No mention of Creevy? Isa would be deserving.

Imhoff didn't play much in the 7s, but he got carded in the match he played the most (against USA).

Pumas' HC clearly prefers Landajo over Cubelli, so that condemns the latter to a reserve role. But Landajo tends to play too much for himself, and most of his runs have ended in a turnover because he hardly has support (not his failure but a coaching one, true, but nevertheless he should by now know better and look to have a supporting player always on his shoulder...).

Creevy could very well be in the list, certainly ahead of Sanchez who didn't shine this year...

There's a 2-week training camp going on with 22 local players, in order to select new players for the Jaguares and Argentina XV squads.

UAR has also released next year's schedule for both the international and national seasons. It's in Spanish, so some translations are necessary:

L means LOCAL (home games)
V means VISITANTE (away games)

Argentina XV will play the Americas Rugby Championship in February, the Tblisi Cup in June and the America Pacific Challenge in October

COMPETENCIA NACIONAL means National Competitions.
The dates in grey represent the National Club Championship
The dates in dark blue represent the National Provincial Championship, the National Women's Championship (marked N CF) and the National Sevens
The dates in blue at the beginning of our season mark the Provinces Club Championship, that runs in parallel with the National Clubs one.
The green part of the calendar is the period saved for local/regional tournaments that will determine the qualifiers for the 2018 National and Provincial Club Championships.

So the playoffs of the Nacional de Clubes and Torneo del Interior will be played during the club season.

Yes, it seems UAR is aiming to test long term Club's form, with the National competitions stretching for nearly four months instead of a short period at the beginning of the year.

UAR has confirmed the venues for next year's Americas Rugby Championship to be played by Argentina XV, the 2nd national team. Some non traditional venues have been selected

San Juan and Jujuy, OTOH, are rather small rugby provinces, and previous matches in San Juan have never sold out, so it's a rather odd chice IMHO. But then, money talks. It's quite certainly provincial governments dishing out the money to pay for the venue rights, considering UAR demands tend to be a bit over the top in that matter.

Jaguares balance so far:

SH Martín Landajo is out for a while (broken fibula). Will ndergo surgery later today.
FH Juan Hernandez is doing only fitness training due to a broken cheeckbone back in the first training session. Will only start doing contact again in mid-February.
Centre Matías Moroni suffered an elbow injury yesterday and will be out for 2/3 weeks.

Uruguayan winger Nicolás Freitas has joined the Jaguares squad, and started in the first training match last Monday.

I am just struggling to understand how the Jaguares team will evolve under this new circumstance.

I should have written for clarity: "when they have previously reached a certain amounts of caps before leaving"

if go Australian model over Welsh Muller would certainly miss out (if he ends up good enough), Corderito is low 30s of caps and Isa must be under 30.

Welsh model makes more sense currently, but would weaken the Jags in future as big money names will move away early.

I am not worried about this, because most big names have already moved. Jaguares just cannot compete with the money being offered abroad.

Every time Jaguares play locally, the attendance is limited. So the big names we still have are not making a huge difference. Can Jaguares play worse than what they do with this measure? Maybe. But if they have to be relegated to the Currie Cup or the SA Rugby Challenge, so be it. The Pumas are the absolute priority.

We had good results when we had an open selection policy and the Pampas XV. Let's see if we can keep the Jaguares in Super Rugby, but we have to keep in perspective they are just a mean for an end. I just hope we can have a business model in which the Super Rugby and/or development teams are sustainable, so that we do not have to rely only in players based in Europe.

I was particularly blown away by Ortega Desio's new found pace. I followed the Pumas/Jaguares players very closely last year and I don't remember him ever being this dynamic. He had that one run and solo try that barely made sense for me. I know he played 7's, but still. Unless my memory is failing me badly I recall he played lots of last year as lock forward. What pace for such a profile.
