When I was a young man I really like Lucky Dube. I was lucky enough to see him live in Sydney. I haven't listened to any of his music for nearly 20 years until I randomly thought of him today whilst doing some house chores and so downloaded some of his music on spotify.

House of Exile - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT6PgvDHVGk

Yes he is big in the islands, and it was my half Samoan older brother who got me into him. Went on a family holiday to Samoa two years ago and the first general shop we went into was was blasting 'House of Exile' as we entered, which was kind of cool.

When i was in South Africa in 2009 i found the few Afrikaaners who were hanging around with my mate working there loved country music.

I don't know any SA bands. I remember being in a night club in Cape town called Tiger tiger and it basically played pop music from USA

Yes, it's true. Country music is quite popular here from the USA.

With 11 official languages as well as a few others there is no "South African music" as such

In a rock or pop sense, even a “Beautiful women of NZ” thread would leave this for dead.

Huge fan of lucky Dube. I've heard his music played pretty much in every African country I've traveled to.

Johnny Clegg has a special place in my heart.

Other notable mentions are Just Jinger, Springbok Nude Girls, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Even PJ Powers brings back good memories

An African country doesn’t produce much well known Western-style music?

That's why I used the terms 'rock' and 'pop', of which a lot is produced by South African artists.

A lot of the current Gqoma/Afro-House coming out of South Africa doesn't generically "sound African" by comparison with older Township Jive...

This compilation from '85 is more back in the Mbaqanga vein...
