Question for our resident meatheads.

Does doing DLs @80% x4 on the minute every 2 minutes for like 5 rounds seem excessive?

Some workout that my missus was doing in CF (I know, I know). Seems like way too high an intensity for that length of recovery. Like I don't know what the benefits or goals are of those kind of rep/sets. It's not for strength, and technique will suffer after a couple of sets, so it's not that either.

Seems to just be designed so you can say how f**ked you are afterwards.
She didn't appreciate my opinion on it.

Kind of a fun story related to this. I've decided to do a sport management course and the profs held an info session yesterday. Part of it was showing the sort of discussions that take place and they wanted us to contribute. Question was something like "What challenges are being faced by the Tokyo Olympics?" and the slide had a picture of Hubbard in the corner. I love a good sport debate, but I was like ...

So when no one said anything, I jumped in with something mild like the lack of spectators impacting money made, sponsors, atmosphere. :)

I agree with you. Although I don’t think the percentage, reps or sets is particularly that bad. Just putting it against a strict time is just stupid. Especially with dead’s to

New York’s strongest man a week on Saturday. A little nervous about my new programming, I haven’t touched anything heavy for about 2 months.

Truck pull and car deadlift from New York’s strongest man, came second in both.
Zeroed the Circus dumbbell which completely f**ked me and struggled with the fingals fingers. Ended up 4th in the masters, not bad for my 3rd comp.

That's mad stuff. Way too intense - you can see why so many people who do Crossfit get injuries if this is the shite they're peddling.

The sitting around cooling off between events is a killer, no warm up lifts and then going balls out on what probably a 550+ deadlift is tough.

Truck pull was surprisingly easy. Any deadlift for reps event is pretty horrible.

On holidays with the missus. Today we cycled 60km over the Gap of Dunloe in Kerry (in stages with food and chilling out in between).

This is my 4th time on the bike. Her 2nd. Wore padded shorts, and my arse is in bits and the rest of my body is in shock.

Really enjoyed it, though.

I got myself a concept 2 bike erg during lock down. Lovely bit of kit, but my arse can’t handle more than 30 minutes.

Did the conti thunder run 24hr race on the last weekend.

managed 80km in total which was ok if disappointing. Not as far as I wanted but had a few heat related issues and for the first time in ages got lots of blisters. All the distances were lower this year with no-one hardened/race-fit after covid with many people not raced an Ultra for 2 years now.

Had a great time though and so much banter both within my club who were running and with other runners/marshals out on course. It finally felt like a normal activity (for a given definition of normal of course...)

Did a leg session this morning without using a barbell. :(
Need to back off anything involving my lower back and rebuild a bit for a couple of months.

Hack squats as my "heavy" movement. Then lots of unilateral stuff; BSS, SL hip thrusts, SL RDLs (but with no weight, purely working on control and proprioception), SL hammie curls.

Decent leg pump, TBF. Think I've a fair bit of work to do on my glutes, getting them to work a bit more equally.

Do have access to a reverse hyper? Doing single leg reverse hypers has been a game changer for me. 3 sets of 25 on each leg as part of my lower body warm up.

Ooh, think there is one tucked away in the corner. Will deffo give them a go. Have to dig out my hip circles and do crab walks etc to get the contraction firing.

So don't have access to a proper reverse hyper, but do have one of those back extension things like below.
Did them one leg at a time with just bodyweight and slow controlled reps.

Now my hammies are broken. I legitimately can't walk properly, and it's over two days since.

Just outrageous DOMS. No surprise really, an exercise that I haven't done in living memory, so it's always going to hurt no matter how in shape I am or not.

Back in to do glute dominant stuff tomorrow. That'll be fun to add on top of proper soreness.

You could just stack up a couple of plyo boxes and do single leg reverse hypers with no weight. Great for warm ups.

Gets blood into your lower back without fatiguing it as well.

My lower body warm up at moment is 3 circuits of 25 RDL’s with the bar, 25 banded abductions on each leg, 25 single leg reverse hypers and one minute squat sit. Seems to be working pretty well.

Friends are over from the UK at the moment, so I met one of them for a gym session this morning.

I did my leg volume session while he tested his squat 1RM and did some fun stuff (strong bastard hit 190 without completely grinding it out). Then we did some what he called "I hate myself" stuff.

I'd already done around 100 reps of hack squats, belt squats, back extentions etc. Then we did farmer carries followed by assault bike, and 50kg sandbag over the shoulder followed by prowler pushes.

Felt a bit queasy by the end. :uhoh:

I do like a bit of sand bag to shoulder action. Normally an emom with a 100lb bag, 6 reps a minute for 12 minutes.

It's absolutely hideous. I didn't choose it, my mate did.

Only had the idea of the sandbag because it was sitting out already from someone else. Just saw it and figured it would be fun. I've never used one before. Really awkward dead weight, but somethingg different.
Between the farmer carries, sandbag, and prowler, felt a bit like an actual strongman.
Until I collapsed and rolled around on the floor for a bit. Some women getting their 1 on 1 PT sessions with 12kg KB exercises must have been wondering what the hell we were doing.

It’s always amusing watching civilians react to proper training.

Assault bike sprints put so much blood in my legs I can barely walk. 50 seconds of just turning the pedals and a 10 second sprint is far harder than it sounds. I did 5 minutes at the end of a session the other day and was shagged.

Have been programmed tempo squats for the first time in years in my new block. 4 second negative then straight back up.

First session last night. 1 set of 4 followed by 3 sets of 7 normal squats.

Plucked a number out my head which was 160.
