Star Wars XV

I'm sure this has been done before but I'm bored, and it's topical with the new film coming out.

I've stuck to the original trilogy, mainly because the other ones are shite. I'm pretty happy with my pack but the backline needs some work. I'm struggling to think of out-and-out speedsters for the wings. The Tauntaun would probably get it done against the minnows but come up blank against the likes of South Africa.

It's a serious tight 5 though, with a bruising no.8 and two exceptionally crafty flankers.

1. Sarlacc
2. Jabba
3. Space Slug
4. Rancor
5. Chewbacca
6. Darth Vader
7. Emperor Palpatine
8. Wampa
9. Yoda
10. Luke
11. Tauntaun
12. Tusken Raider
13. Obi-Wan (c)
14. Han Solo
15. Boba Fett

Swap Han Solo and Emperor Palpatine, Han Solo would do all the dirty work, and pushes the rules therefore a no 7 , Emperor Palpatine, sits on the wing, and pops up in the last minute to take the credit..

Yeah put Luke at 10.

You need someone at 10 that is unbelievably fucking stupid, blind to what's going on and despite getting lots and lots of instruction on what to do, still manages to fuck it all up.

Luke = Faz

True. We could use a few Bothans for opposition analysis though.

This exercise needs to be internally consistent to be at all credible. You can't have a mile long slug at prop, then one lock at 25 feet tall and one at 7 feet tall. My views below:

1. Jabba
2. Gamorrean Guard
3. Uncle Owen (fattest bloke in Star Wars?)
4. Darth Vader (bloody tall)
5. Chewbacca
6. Han Solo
7. Boba Fett - tough, big guy, dirty. Link man.
8. 4 Ewoks standing on each other's shoulders
9. Yoda
10. Obi-Wan
11. Luke - That rookie needs to be out where he can't cause any harm
12. Lando (great suggestion)
13. Wedge Antilles (slippery, Guscott like OC)
14. Grand Moff Tarkin - Wiry bloke, hard to bring down
15. The Emperor - No-one is getting past the last line of defence

Jab a has got to be TH, surely?

I see boba fett as a 6. Mobile, athletic enforcer.

I will admit that the logistics of my tight five would take some getting around, but I assume some sort of Force magic could be invoked to solve those problems. We'd probably only get 50 minutes or so out of the Space Slug though.

I like the look of that team but Uncle Owen isn't big enough. The Rancor's keeper at 1 and Jabba at 3 would be better. Wedge is a good shout for the backline.

Another thought for possible fattest bloke in star wars - Porkins. But you never saw him out of his X-Wing so he might have been a relatively slender chap with a fat face and a silly name.

I'd have vader at 8.

Not sure about the Openside.

Somebody short, squat and ultra athletic. Any ideas?

8. Ice Monster From Hoth - got some serious grunt and drags puny fly halves around like rag dolls

TBH I prefer Boba Fett at full back, because with the jet pack he'll be magnificant in the air and I really don't like the lack of pace the emperor has. Might as well play Mike Brown there.

1. Jek Porkins
2. R2D2 (using his lightsaber trick during lineouts would be very handy)
3. The big chef alien thing from early on in Ep II
4. Chewie
5. Captain Tarpals (the competent Gungan)
6. Darth Maul
7. Zam Wesell
8. Bossk
9. Yoda
10. Obi-Wan Kenobi
11.
12. General Grievous
13. Darth Vader
14.
15. Boba Fett

Stuck for wingers

With a literal shapeshifter at openside, I'm sure that's a manageable deficit

Boba Fett is soooooooo overrated. He has achieved nothing of note and is swallowed up easily. Would only make the team of his dad was picking it.

I would definitely go for someone from the dark side for an openside. Darth Maul possibly, although he's more of a speedy little back than a loosie. How about General Grievous? Four hands would make for some seriously ball stealing capability. That 360 spinning defence might come in handy too.

10 emperor
11 greedo
12 darth vader

Leia would be my scrum half, chippy, major attitude, always talking trash. She killed Jabba the Hut despite being half his size and was a prominent leader in the rebellion, perfect scrum half material imo.

Rancor at number 5. Tall and huge mits. Could easily switch to beast mode one off the ruck.

Chewbacca at blindside. Only one who could neutralise Kaino.

Max Reebo at loose head. Would lay down some serious scrummaging groove and rhythm.

Chewy would be the tallest in the squad, had to be at lock.

At 5 m tall I'd want the Rancor pinching opposition ball.

Ideally Darth Vader would be in the second row, he's not quite mobile enough for the backrow but plenty tall enough and big enough to be a target in the lineout and provide some beef in the scrums. Ostensibly a nasty piece of work but at heart just a loving, family man. The Sith Lord equivalent of Martin Johnson, basically.

Yellow card magnet. TMO would be doing overtime with allegations of telekinetic neck rolls, choking holds etc

From the last time we had this discussed I made an article.

http://rugbywrapup.com/2012/05/maythe-4 ... -day-rugby

RUGBY GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY – Granted, Star Wars can indeed be considered an exclusive proclivity for, well… Nerds. But if you think about it, nearly everyone has seen the original trilogy at some point. That, plus the fact that today is some sort of Star Wars celebration – Star Wars Day –  combined with a query by a gentlemen in a rugby chat-room as to whether he should expose his young kids to these movies, as the inspiration(s) for this article. . I tuned out immediately but then it morphed into something that got my attention. The question was if you had to make a rugby team of Star Wars characters, who would you pick and why? Well on International Star-Wars day, I figure this would be the day to reveal the RWU All-Star Wars team.

TEAM
1. Rankor: Strong, fast and mobile. Not afraid of a little contact which is key for a loose-head.
2. Ewok: Undersized yes, but a load of feisty and not afraid to protect those on his side.
3. Jabba: You lose mobility in a big way but your set-piece will be solid.
4. Chewbacca: A Wookie with an angry disposition adds the right amount of grunt for the tight lock role.
5. Darth Vader (Captain): He will win all line-out ball, provide enough force to move Jabba and will command presence as the captain.
6. Boba Fett: Will have no problem cutting the opposition in half in order to help get turnover ball. Will demand to be paid per turnover ball however.

Wookies/New Zealand 7s

7. Jango Fett: Same as his son and the price just doubled.
8. Mace Wanadu: Calm and composed with controlled aggression and good vision.
9. Darth Maul: Nimble, quick and having no problem bossing the forwards. Can also use Jedi mind tricks. For instance, he will tell the ref, “This is the ball you wish to see,” even when unplayable.
10. Luke Skywalker: Natural to lead a back-line attack. May only make half the training sessions, as is his nature.
11. Lando Calrisian: As a diplomat, he will choose his moments carefully and look busy.
12. Qui-Gon Jinn: A great link-man, who will be strong on defense and work well with the Fly-half and Outside Center.
13. Obi-Wan Kenobi: With the difficulty of playing the 13 channel, there is no more complete defender and play-maker for this position.
14. Wedge Antilles: A flyer not scared of top speed and willing to take his opportunities… no matter how small the gap.
15. Hans Solo: Can be bit reckless but is fearless in the air and takes pride in not being beat.
COACHES:
Head Coach & Backs Coach: Yoda: The prefect leader of the coaching staff to train and prep for victory. Who else can juggle all those personalities? As backs coach he will harness their collective talents.
Forwards, Scrum & Line-outs: Emperor Palpatine: Coaching the forwards requires knowledge of the Dark Arts and he is more than skilled in this area. His forwards will guarantee front-foot ball.
Defense: Admiral Akbar: Someone has to teach the team how to identify a trap by the offense.

And there you have it, the RWU All-Star Wars Team. Who will they play? How about a Lord Of The Rings XV??? Too nerdy? Maybe. But feel free to have your say and disagree.

As always, keep low and keep pumping those legs.
