The Polish economy is roaring. Apparently they have taken in close to a million (!) Ukrainians. Lots of truck drivers, builders etc since a lot of the locals in those fields went elsewhere in the last 10 years.

I've just had back to back meetings with two small but very innovative and on trend companies. Both of them are in the drinks supply business, one alcohol one soft drinks.

Both of them have quietly raised finance, not through crowdfunding, for massive expansion. They'd both found new premises, they were both on the way to signing for them.

In the last week, both of their investors (who are VC capital fund investors if I understand it correctly) have pulled out citing uncertainty in the UK market. Both the brewer and the soft drinks manufacturer were already under pressure with the weakness of the pound. The soft drinks guy buys most of his fruit from Europe and supply lines are a major worry

Basically, there's two companies who currently employ 30-35 people who were looking to expand and employ at least the same again. Both of them in very bouyant markets

They'd have employed 12 people on top of that for 6 months redoing the new places

All of this (and I realise this is a tiny microscopic bit of the economy) is gone. And talking to a few people in similar situations, it's not unique

It's indefensible. When we look back on this in a few years nobody will be able to get their head round what we've done to ourselves.
