That won’t last 10 seconds in the courts. It’s obviously just another fascist tactic from fascists to tempt some people that are a bit fascist.

I like the idea of people who are a little bit fascist. Subtle salutes, and the hint of a mustache. Or a ministerial position in the Australian government.

Perhaps I’m just particularly upbeat after a spectacular grilled cheese, but I’m feeling far more sanguine.
I assume you are in one of those Blue States, they do sound terrible.
Re: POTUS-DONALD TRUMP-and U.S. Politics catch-all
No, Merryland with Gov Hogan, who has been fairly reasonable through this. Still I'd like to fly out and Jacinda has promised to take me back after my defection, but still can't get a flight out. What about you, still in the US or have you escaped?Mr Mike wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 5:54 pmPerhaps I’m just particularly upbeat after a spectacular grilled cheese, but I’m feeling far more sanguine.

Heading home for Christmas, long break but not sufficiently long to create a taxable presence. I listened to Gov Hogan on a podcast recently, disturbingly reasonable person.
Re: POTUS-DONALD TRUMP-and U.S. Politics catch-all
Really? Lucky you. Are you flying Air NZ from LAX? How long ago did you book that? My understanding - and I'm going through a travel agent here in these unreliable times - is that schedules are unstable and flights regularly cancelled. I would drop everything to leave at a moment's notice, as I figure I will be exposed to the virus irrespective of whether I stay here or take 2 flights back to NZ. Would rather get it over with.Mr Mike wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 6:30 pmHeading home for Christmas, long break but not sufficiently long to create a taxable presence. I take it you have your voucher for 2 week's quarantine in NZ?
Re: POTUS-DONALD TRUMP-and U.S. Politics catch-all
Booked it reasonably recently, in the last three weeks IIRC. The flights can be a little unreliable but hopefully the voucher system will help firm that up.
There are three of us heading back. My wife and son go a week earlier. Neither is keen to share a room so they have separate accommodation, I land later and get another room. I think I’ll be funding the entire December quarantine budget.
I read that only 23 invoices have been paid to date.

Re: POTUS-DONALD TRUMP-and U.S. Politics catch-all
Huh. Sounds like I better get on to my agent and set him to work, maybe the east-west US flight is the issue. It will be interesting to see how full your plane is. How much does each room cost? Thanks for the info, MM - I have been contacting the NZ Embassy and MFAT, and I'm on the mailing list, but it's just line and verse, no anecdotal stories.Mr Mike wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 6:58 pm Booked it reasonably recently, in the last three weeks IIRC. I saw Pelosi with Blitzer too, and it struck me that she was rattled. At one stage she accused Blitzer/CNN as being apologists for the Republicans. That was just bizarre. CNN might not be quite as pro-Democrat as Fox is pre-Republican, but it's not far off.fonzeee wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 9:12 pmI caught the clip of her talking to Wolf Blitzer on CNN a couple days ago and wanted to see if anyone mentioned it. So if she is feeling the pressure then she needs to get a deal done. And if Trump is, as seems, more willing than McConnell then she needs to suck it up and call him. People are struggling, and they are doing squat.

Re: POTUS-DONALD TRUMP-and U.S. Politics catch-all
Needs a viable third party. In my time in the US it strikes me that there never seems to be a 3rd choice, or a middle way, or even 4th and 5th choices. It's black and white, goodies and baddies, Republican or Democrat, "you're either with us or you're against us", democratic systems versus anything else etc etc etc. And there's nowhere else to go, impasse. Why can't people here conceive of alternatives?fonzeee wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 10:15 pmExactly. Quit the f**king games and get something through. Utterly emblematic of a broken system.
Whereas in Europe it's all shades of grey; most governments are coalitions, especially with proportional representation systems, and there are always a number of choices in anything.
I think it's time for a beer now.

Re: POTUS-DONALD TRUMP-and U.S. Politics catch-all
This QAnon thing is a disgrace. What people want Trump to say is that 90 IQ hairdressers should not be allowed to have stupid conspiracy theories when in fact of course they should. Their theories can't be more stupid than the Trump collusion idiocy, which was without doubt the conspiracy theory to end them all. So what if someone thinks 5G towers created coronavirus. Some people think we should give Marxism another crack because it will definitely work this time!!! Other morons think, absent a single shred of evidence, that there is this thing called structural racism in the US that explains all race relations and all racial disparities. At east the QAnon types aren't trying to impose their stupid conspiracy theories on the rest of us. Having QAnon is the price of living in a free society. Trump gets this. Oddly, or perhaps not so oddly, the so-called liberals don't.
