OK. We can only wait for the cue.

Noticed (skimming) through the posts that websites mentioned. Zenfolio is one way: and yes, it is subscription so some of the funding would need to be used for that.

Yeah, my thoughts are that or a web-page with a payment portal. However, Paypal may be easier and quicker to start if they have one available

This is entirely unnecessary and possibly counter productive. Photos have a higher commercial value with exclusivity? So no point in doing something that damages your ability to make a living.

Anyway, to me, it'd feel like picking a dead man's pocket (if you'll forgive the expression).

I have never heard of this Patreon thing before, and had a look around that site this morning. This is EXACTLY the type of thing I was looking for. It opens so much more possibilities than I'm sure even you could imagine, and I will explain why:

I often have good ideas. No wait, make that great ideas. For once I will blow my own horn. My biggest problem, which is be a direct result of my mental illness, is never following through with my ideas. I'll have these great ideas during my up-phase, only to be hit by the down-phase a week or 2 later, and all plans fly out of the window.

My one idea, the one closest to my heart, is to start photography clubs at under-priviledged schools. If you understood the Saffa situation, you'll know what this involves: kids with virtually no future, forgotten even by their own government, schools who sometimes get their text books 8 months into the school year. I'd like to go around to these schools, teach them the basics, and get to a point where I could supply at least one camera to every school, for the kids to practice with. Furthermore, if legally possible I'd even like to get to a stage where a school can start making money from their photography clubs to improve their schools, look after those kids who come to school hungry, etc. But the first and most important thing would be to start generating a new generation of future photographers.

I believe this Patreon site could help me achieve that goal. Which in turn will also give me a full-time job (although I wouldn't call it a job, more of a mission).

So thank you for this suggestion. I will definitely sign up today.

Every post on this thread has caused more dust in my house (I cannot afford a cleaner, you idiots! :P ). Not only the offers for help in whatever way, but also every word of encouragement, every post of wisdom, hell even the humorous posts (and to answer all questions about this, I thoroughly enjoy the humour, especially the dark humour) brought an extra tear to my eye. It is for that reason that I did to offer free downloads of my photos to everybody, not only those who contributes financially. Because every poster had helped me in some way or another, some might not even realise it.

I'm trying to take everything in, and think of the how, when, where for every offer for assistance. My website, which exists but is basically just ashell right now, it's definitely high up on my to do list, so I will definitely try and arrange something through Sydvicious and his mate.

Thanks for making me laugh. That's the type of dark humour I love. But admittedly, you do have a point, I may have gotten enough $$$ from the boredies to book a flight to Switserland, never thought about it until you mentioned it :o

Seriously though, I've been kept rather busy since this whole saga started, especially with that Patreon site thing Redsfan suggested, that I haven't thought much about feeling down. Of course being able to channel the energy I wasted on finances and use it for the better, does help a lot.

I have in fact started to incorporate Real Estate Photography into my bigger plans. In this sense I've already hooked up with somebody on the North Coast of Natal who does it as part of his photography package, and he seems willing to let me help him out, and in turn give me leads in my area. Once I'm on my medication, I would be in a better position to start approaching the estate agents too; unfortunately where I am right now in my recovery, I'm not fully capable to do that just yet, but I reckon 2 weeks or so on my meds and I should have that extra boost in energy, and confidence. I do know quite a lot of the "tricks" for Real Estate Photography, and even when doing wedding photography you need to know the basics of how to photograph interiors of buildings, so I'm sure I could do well.

My full scope of works would in the end be: stock photography, product photography (especially small-medium sized businesses) and Real Estate Photography. And then on top of this, I'm planning a charity organisation which will hopefully take photography to the poorer schools, most of them from previous disadvantaged communities, where you have kids who have been all but forgotten by even their own government, and is basically set up for failure from the word go. I'm hoping to at least give some of these kids the opportunity to one day become photographers themselves. And whilst teaching photography, there's other advantages like making maths and science fun, making them care for the fauna and flora, the beauty of landscapes (whilst showing them the disadvantages of littering for example). This may however cause me to lose my Amigo membership.

Dig around with the charity thing Trogs. I've seen people make a go of this if they get them properly set up and can provide the right accounting paperwork for tax deductions and free import. If you're not afraid of asking for money, and can back it up with actual follow up performance and keeping the accountants happy, and are not shy of using some of the money for yourself (which may sound cynical but it's the way it works) it could well be a winner.

It's the sort of thing you can be quite surprised just what leaps out of the woodwork with a little bit of careful, simple marketing. You already know the interweb stuff regards photography and getting your name about the planet.

It might not take much to set up once you've laid the corporate foundation. Say a couple of hundred cheap snappers to hand out to kids (?? I'm sure you'll have your own thoughts), you do your photography of the happy kids, put the photos out in the world and something may snowball.

Let us know if you can get the org set up.
