He's a Turk living in Istanbul. Other reports claim the armed forces are trying to overthrow Erdogan.

Hmm, from what I've seen separately, this wouldn't be unexpected. Merci

Erdogan may well be balancing a precarious rule, but the guy is utterly ruthless when it comes to power enforcement.

It's a fine tradition in Turkey. Ataturk established a secular state post WW1 and the army is almost obliged to step in if the government departs too far.

That's a consensual feeling this time.

Social media blackout effective now.

Agreed but this time I'm all for it.

Erdogan is a lunatic who undid a shitload of the good work Ataturk did in making Turkey a modern country.

I worked for many a very senior Turkish military officer some 20 yrs ago as a very lowly Brit. Their concerted opinion then (from aged memory) was that Erdogan and his cohorts presented a very distrustful and duplicitous future. It seems that they might have been right in their concerns?

A partial coup? According to the Turkish PM.

If this coup works, great for us. An Islamist president gone, and Turkey won't get into EU.
