So all that load management for Kawhi seems a bit pointless now. Glad we don't have to hear from Patrick Beverley anymore.

Damn! The Nuggets have showed a lot of heart to come back from 1-3 series deficits to win both series. The Clippers have a lot of explaining to do. The stats in the box score is horrific.

Clippers were awful, dont worry Kawhi will get another championship (and finals MVP) but not sure when. Took him him 5 years between last 2. Am disappointed with clippers but definitely impressed with Nuggets though. They really like to grind it out in long series. I expect Lakers to win it but they will be made to work for it though... Go the Lakers!

Everyone's favourite team the Lakers opens up the Western Conference finals with a comfortable victory. :P They've got a few players who look to be in good form at the moment.

So, LBJ having a moan about the 'narrative' bias in MVP voting is a bit odd. I mean, he's absolutely got a point GENERALLY, but this year the narrative is the only reason anyone could realistically argue him over Giannis.

More to the point, there's a difference between MVP and 'Who is the best player" and Lebron is the latter.

I see Giannis is only the 5th player in NBA history to have won MVP and Defensive player of the year. Without looking it up online, can anyone correctly guess who the other 4 players were to have won MVP and Defensive player of the year awards? (the awards don't need to be won in the same year).

I'm actually going to try this:

Olajuwan
Kareem
Jordan
Bill Walton

Edit: balls, only got two. The other two made multiple 1st team All-D but never took home DPOY.

I would have got two out of two as well if truth be told. The same two players that you picked.

Me too. My other guess would be Kobe, but I googled that and it's wrong too.

Dunno, Wilt? Oscar Robertson? Russell?

Ok, I've googled it and I should definitely have guessed one of them.

Just realised I read that wrong and have been thinking it was both in the same year...

I know KG won MVP with the Wolves and DPoY with the Celtics. MJ and Olajuwon are obvious

Dunno the other. I was thinking maybe Tim Duncan, but I'm pretty sure Ben Wallace was perennial DPoY during TD's peak

I can recall the MVPs to about the mid 90s when Jordan and Malone were always wining it... so it must be someone from before I watched

Feel bad for Plumlee, all the analysis is on him messing up to leave AD open but the iso cam showed Grant was calling for a double team on Lebron and should've then switched onto AD.

Wilt was not the Defensive Player of the Year type. When he got 5 fouls everyone attacked him relentlessly because he would quit playing defense due to a fear of fouling out.

The Defensive Player of the Year award stated in 1982, long after Chamberlain retired. I don't know if Wilt would have won DPOY during his playing days, but I do know Bill Russell would have.

I'll just spoil it, it's David Robinson. To be fair that was a bit left field for me, not that he was a shabby player at all, just lacks the name recognition of others. Hell even Tim Duncan seems more plausible.

Robinson as DPOY isn't surprising in retrospect, he was an amazing athlete and was always at the top of the table in both blocks and steals. His MVP award has kind of been forgotten as he wasn't able to be the best player on a championship team and needed Duncan to get the Spurs over the top. Didn't help that in his MVP season he got absolutely dismantled by Hakeem in the playoffs.

I don't think that should be held against the Admiral. Everyone needs help to win a ring.

I'd love to see a Nugs v Heat finals series but I'm sure most probably want to see another episode of the old rivalry.

I mean, he was still a great player, but there's a massive difference when it comes to discussing a player's career and legacy between those who have been the best player on a championship team and those who haven't.

Duncan is a great player blessed to have been part of a franchise with huge depth for the majority of his career. He never had to shoulder the load that Robinson had to earlier in his career and proof of that is Duncan never led the league in any major category let alone 3 like Robinson. I'm sure prime Hakeem would have made the big fundamental his bitch too.

Anyhoo Tyler Herro with 37 off the bench with the Heat one win away from the big dance

That's one hell of a performance from a rookie in a Conference final. It's hard not to like this Heat team. I see Tyler Herro was born in the year 2000 FFS. Damn, I feel old.

Damn, did anybody see the play Murray did in the 2nd quarter? I rarely say this, but that was Michael Jordan-esque.

That was a great 4th quarter for the Heat, finals will be interesting.

Can't remember who said it, but when you look at the lineups in terms of talent it's interesting. If you ranked all the players in the series it's the Lakers with 1 and 2 clearly but the Heat might have the next 5 and they're a really tough matchup for LA. They've got great D, clutch players and a lot of outside shooting. Still, hard to bet against LA with the form James & Davis are in.

Highly tempted to withdraw my house deposit savings and drop it all on the Lakers. I think the Lake show has tremendous depth and the minutes rotation reflects that. The Heat pretty much rely on 7 players. I wonder how their legs will hold up.

I love a good underdog story though. Come on Miami!!!

I think every championship-winning NBA coach in history would take the top 2 players and none of the next 5.

Agree, only outliers in recent times pistons in 04 and mavs in 11, lakers got best 2 definitely and have enough good players who have stepped up around those 2. Butler definitely has an alpha personality (just ask KAT and simmons/embiid) but needs a shaq or lebron like wade did. Regardless going to be a fun series...
