i want to see the rebels develop a midfield of Hodge and Sefa, we know Sefa can play 13, enuf cover on wing with Dom, Marika, Tom and Pama and maybe Sefa can be a Wallaby Backup13as well next year.. behind Kerevi and TK (lets face it, cheika will never play folau there)

Unfortunately I think he'll always be a year away.

That Garden-Bachop is in disgraceful shape, a total fatty.

I really like the backrowers. The wings are seriously exciting. Hodge and Sefa in the centres needs to happen. Fullback and flyhalf are :uhoh: Everywhere else is solid-ish.

Kinda liked Meehan at 5/8, but granted, it was NRC competition
Still, an option I guess. Needs to improve his offhand pass though, it's a bit skittish at times. Reads the play exceptionally well though

Mafi at No. 8 is a good get.

He was strong against Wales last weekend - great ball carrier, good off loading game too.

A squad of 42? Assume that includes some academy players in it?

They could send Meehan out at prop and you'd like him tbf. Probably still a better option than Deborah though.

Did you see him at 10? He looked OK, not a Supe level player, but then again neither is JD at the moment. Needs to work on his weaker hand passing but did alright, he's also got a very good turn of speed and plays the support role that a 9 does well.

Best looking squad yet. Good balance of Experience, youth, power and pace. I hope they'll play Timani in the backrow but with Mafi at 8, Timani will probalby have to play Lock?

He plays 8 for Australia exactly how he plays lock for the Rebels, it'll make no difference save where he packs in the scrum. I'd way rather see Timani at lock and McMahon, Fainga'a/Read, Mafi in the backrow than one of the spud locks starting, Timani at 8, and Fainga'a/Read on the bench.

Not exactly true. He's running more with the ball at no 8 and plays not as tight. But yeah he's certainly no Read or Vunipola yet. However if he's to become a great test no 8, he needs to play more in the backrow to improve his running game and linking with backs. But then again I agree that the best use of the talent Rebels have in the forwards would be to have both Timani and Mafi in the starting team. Could have Mafi at 6, McMahon at 7 and Timani 8. But it's a bit of waste to have Faingaa and Read on the bench (I'd have Read over Faingaa because he's a bit more physical and harder on the ball than Faingaa).

We have enough firepower in forwards and backs to do plenty of damage as long as Stirzacker and Debreczini won't play like utter garbage. I'm hoping Garden-Bachop can take Debs' place.

So what are people's expectations for the season? I think winning more than we lose is a must this year and if we can take 2nd in the conference I would be happy.

Have you seen the state of him?

I am... Not hopeful. I think we'll again play a too conservative brand of rugby. Fitness and skills won't be up to it, and we won't be able to hang with the Kiwis. Fourth in the conference, 13th/14th overall. There are some seriously fun players on the team though, if it clicks it could be awesome.

Our big issue is a lot of players who have broken into, and become mainstays in the Wallabies, are all coming off contract at the end of the year. They will all want big pay rises I imagine so it might be difficult to hold onto them.

Timani re-signs for another 2 years. Also signed Volavola as well, not sure what our best XV is just yet though.

I'd say

1. Toby Weeks
2. James Hanson
3. Laurie Weeks
4. Sam Jefferies
5. Callum Rettalick
6. Colby Fainga'a
7. Sean McMahon
8. Lopeti Timan
9. Nic Stirzaker
10. Jackson Garden-Bachop
11. Marika Koroibete
12. Mitch Inman
13. Sefa Naivalu
14. English/Shipperly
15. Reece Hodges

Locks and halves are the only weak position i can see ..but hoping that welsh lock signing will do good and Jackson and Jack will rotate at 10. no hope for 9. really strong backrow though.

Sean McMahon goooooooone...

8-10 weeks apparently due to his crook ankle, according to the snouts at GaGR.

So, no locks, and a "really strong backrow", none of whom has ever won a lineout in his life.

Sounds promising.

Pama Fou out for the year with an ACL...

McMahon will miss the first month of the season after having ankle surgery...

Korobeite has picked up an MCL injury, but the club is still hoping to have him fit for the Tens... although he could still be out for the start of the season if more serious...

Jeffries (ankle) and Dow (shoulder) are also expected to miss a few games at the start.

It looks like a mid table squad to me, which if it comes to pass is no mean feat.

The Rebels are a respectable and established squad these days, and boy am I grateful we have a team here.

I spent two weeks in Melbourne over Christmas and New Year and it felt like the Rebels and rugby didn't exist.

I really couldn't believe how little interest I saw. One guy literally said to me 'who cares mate'. I know AFL is king in Victoria but I found that so disappointing ...

Rugby in NZ isn't even high on the agenda around Xmas and New Year. You could meet countless Leaguies in Auckland who'd tell you the same thing.

Speaking of Melbourne sport, my brother's good mate has just been named CEO of the MCG. Talk about plum role.

I wouldn't say that's a cvnt of a role, I'd say it's a great role!

I agree with the rest of your post. No one in Melbourne likely gives a fvck about anything other than the Australian Open right now.

I'm fairly confident I could stand in Fitzroy St, St Kilda with a loudhailer singing the Saints Go Marching In and be told to fvck off.

When Super Rugby is relevant again you'll find it has a decent following among the small expat / hardcore Melbourne union crowd.

McMahon is the better player, but at least that gives us another line out option.

Where has McMahon gone? A big loss for the Rebels.

Ankle is f*cked, out for 8-10 weeks. Apparently this happened on the EOYT but the Wallabies doctors cleared him to play and therefore more damage was done and now he is out.

Dominic Day is solid enough. Rebels have some good players. I struggle to see how a team with ball carriers as good as Timani, Mafi and McMahon won't win a fair few games.

How do people think Ben Meehan and Jake Schatz will do in England?

Toby Smith out for 12 weeks, getting surgery.
