Land Rover 101 FC - rugged good looks, immensely practical and can go like shit off a stick.

Marvellous.

Like many of a certain age - you've got to love a fast Ford:

But for the soon-to-be classic, it's got to be my poster car of the 90s, the Marcos Mantis

The Muira... as I grew up car mad and started reading motoring magazines, these things were occasionally referred to in a sort of typewritten hushed undertone. They had an aura about them  and probably started the whole 'supercar' thing off, followed by cars like the Countach and the Ferrari BB512, almost mythical creatures capable of 300km/h or so but brutally impractical and expensive.

Is that a Citroën Dyane, like the one the General used to arrive in, Laurent?

A colleague of mine had one of those and we went from Norwich to Coventry in it.

I have rarely been as car sick in my life. It sort of rolled around a lot.

As I recall, you could adjust the suspension.

Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto or the Toyota 2000GT from the 1960s
Nice choices. Narrowly avoided buying a Boattail Duetto as a restoration project. Fiat 2 litre is a good approximation.

Favourites (if being good to drive doesn't matter)...
1. 300SL Gullwing
2. Dino
3. AC Aceca

If being good to drive does matter
1. Lotus Elise Mk1 (if it counts as a classic)
2. Datsun 240Z
3. Saab Turbo

They used to test drive AC Cobras up and down the M1. At high speeds.

Is that the one that has two reverse gears and can do 70mph backwards?

Edit: Ignore me. I'm thinking of the Police Lotus Carlton.

It's a DS

the Dyane was an "upgraded" 2 CV

Not the Lotus Carlton? 70mph in first gear, I'd add that to my list.

I had two of those. One in Mimosa yellow (the name of my yacht) and one in Inca yellow.

You could stand in the engine bay, there was so much room.

The rear suspension was a funny bit of kit.

I liked the button on the gearstick which flicked it into "overdrive".

I took the former wife and daughter to the south of France in one.

Daughter was in a "Moses basket" in the back.

You'd not do that these days.

One of the most beautiful cars ever produced, though perhaps not yet old enough to be a classic:
