Looking to invest in one of these for travel/cycling throughout the year. Are Go Pro the be all and end all, or are some of the lesser known (and cheaper) brands just as good?

I had a contour, it was great and significantly cheaper than a gopro.

They've gone bust now I think though.

Plenty of equally good alternatives out there these days.

Use both the GoPro and the Garmin, picture quality is incredibly high on both.
Have also had an American one (Accc??) tha twas really cheap, and really effective, until the mounting gave out somewhere in the middle of the desert.

What irks me about the GoPro and similar clones is that they aren't waterproof without the separate housing.

I've been looking for a new action cam, and I'm probably going to get the Olympus Tough TG-Tracker. Was also considering the Nikon KeyMission 170 (no housing needed).

If you need it to be waterproof then I'd look at those first as you don't have to fiddle with a stupid plastic housing, which have also been known to leak.

The new go pro 5 is waterproof with out needing additional covers. There seemed to be a few problems with the 4 and sound interference from the wifi but that is fixed in the 5.

One of the most embarrassing sights you will ever see is a fat, middle-aged twat gurning at the Go-pro on the nose of his pop-out mini-mal, while 'smashing' a 1-foot slopburger

And you see lots of it round our way.

The 'Xiaomi YI 2 4K' is a superb action camera in my opinion. It's essentially a GoPro at half the price. I believe it might even outperform the GoPro in some aspects. It tends to retail in or around the €250.00 EUR mark, but if you shop around you'll probably find one a little cheaper. I managed to find one on http://www.gearbest.com for €190.00 EUR recently.

Noice, I'll have a look at that too then.

More of a specialised cycling camera so might not have the features and form factor you're after but have a look at the Cycliq Fly 12. Main draw over a go pro for me was the battery life.

Nice suggestions, thank you gents

I think as I cycle in Ireland waterproof is a necessity, I'd also be using it for some travel during the summer which does involve beaches, rainforests and lakes. What about the Panasonic Lumix?

Have to say that a mate had the new go pro with him when we were skiing a few weeks back and the footage is terrific. It's also got a stupidly wide angle lens so panorama shots etc are very good.

When I was researching into buying my contour I found a few ski/snowboard/mtb sites that had comparisons as well as a tech site that looked at the actual performance. I'd recommend looking from both ends.
