LR will be gutted.
LR threw away both those races through errors. Must be gutted!
I'm not sure threw away is the right term. Maybe they could have covered TNZ better in the first race, but TNZ definitely looked to have the faster boat in those conditions and it was going to be a big ask to hold them out fir the whole race. There wasn't the huge wind shadow created by the lead bost that we had seen in earlier races.

And while LR coming of the foils gave TNZ the second race, if they hadn't we would have been talking about TNZ's drop off having cost them the race just as it looked like they were going to fly past LR.

Race 2 really highlighted how quickly fortunes can change.

Watching the press conference looks like Prada were a bit pissed at themselves for the first race.

Lot of comments about a strong review and also a comment from Bruni that they weren't going as fast as they were after 'for reasons I won't go into '

Maybe they had a bit of a glitch onboard whether human or mechanical

Sail choice perhaps? Although the did say they were happy with their choice after race one.

Just seen someone predicting 10 to 15 knot wind speeds later today. Hope that's correct.

Defensive masterclass from LR.

Wimd is all over the place. The commentators description of it as a minefield seems appropriate.

I think the commentary team can hear the coms from the boats. They said something about LR deciding they didn't have space to tack over TNZ at that last split and keep control of that side.

Anyway, amazing race!

I was thinking more about the tactic to hold that one side picking up the breeze that came out of nowhere... Spithill just couldn't make it in time to tack onto them.
Yes, total agreement but I do love the way ETNZ can suddenly find a burst of speed that LR can't stay with.

Two pretty awesome days of racing.

One part of me want Luna Rossa to win tomorrow to keep the regatta going- especially if there is more wind on Thursday

Ugh. Luna Rossa threw that last race away. They had sailed so well up until that tack. They over-played their hand and ETNZ sailed into that right hand wind-shift which the commentators had been calling on the chase boat and helicopter... so why didn't Jimmy and his mates see what everyone else could?

It's going to be very hard for LR to come back from here as they're not going to gain an extra 2 knots in the shed and they're forever one tactical error away from being left for dead. ETNZ just sailing smart - confident in the knowledge the have a quicker boat and even when they are beaten off the line they are never out of it.

Four letters in Port and Left.

Always completely lost by the Colregs which say who has to stand on and who has to give way, depending on who is on port and starboard tack....

It was 2013 in San Fran. Up 8-1, first to 9. Lost 9-8. I remember oh so painfully well. That scar tissue is deep.

8-1 up and within reach of winning when the race was cancelled due to time limits. They then lost the next 8 races.

The commentators on TVNZ with the exception of the experienced competition sailors on the panel, are in full crow mode and have been for a few days.
gs, was it race 10? I thought it was about race 12. Either way, gutting.

Thankfully it's YouTube channel for me and they have no skin in the game so a decent balanced thought process. It was always gonna be close either way, and I've seen nothing that has changed my mind.

Thankfully I've been able to get away from tvnz as it's an absolute shitshow of coverage.

Go to americascup.com they have a great panel of commentators, they proved insight but also leave it up to to onboard comms of the sailors to tell the story at times. It's free, no geo block etc. Only kiwi is Steven mcivor and he does a great job of asking a question then leaves it to the experts to talk. Tvnz has become unwatchable

One of the factors quoted in the aftermath was that NZ had designed a fantastic boat but failed to account for the wind conditions at that time of year and were done in by local knowledge... something I think we could say was a factor in yesterday's race.
We had them on the ropes 8-1 and should have kept our foot on their throats and gone for the kill but Oracle requested a layday. We should have refused but we allowed it and Oracle hauled their boat out of the water and made some modifications that added a click or two of extra speed. They now had the faster boat and it seemed their was nothing we could do. Even when we won the starts they would just sail past us. Gut wrenching to watch. A bit like being an All Black fan when Taine Randell was captain.

If I remember correctly the change allowed then to tack better while staying on the foils. There were some questions about what the modification may have been (something automatically controlled rather than being a manual operation) if that was actually legal.

It was before then that the damage was done. They had covered ETNZ well in a defensive masterclass, but once ETNZ managed to head a different way out of the mark and get some separation they were able to build enough speed to prevent LR from covering them.

The commentary team talked about the discussion on LR and how they decided they didn't have enough speed or distance to be able to tack over ETNZ and cover them. So they had a choice of throwing in an extra tack that was likely to be ineffective or heading to the other side and gambling that they would maintain speed and perhaps get a favorable wind shift.

What were the rumours about Dalton?

If the latest ones about taking the cup offshore (if they win today) are true, Dalton will cop it from the NZ public. You'll see a reaction similar to what Coutts copped when he decided to join the opposition after the NZ public supported TNZ so well.

It will be seen as a kick in the teeth.
