What's your point Nieghorn? It was always going to be a second string side just like with Glasgow in 2015. Also they will probably beat us.

Ilnicki has signed with Seattle btw.

Jul. 27 USA (Glendale)
Aug. 3 Fiji (Fiji)
Aug. 9 Tonga (Fiji - not sure if Rugby Canada has this correct)
Aug. 24 Leinster (Ham.)
Sep. 7 USA (Vanc.)

Given our current state, those are some stiff challenges! But it's a decent warm up imho.
Can we assume, at least, that Leinster will be mostly second string given how many Irish internationals are in their squad?
Guaranteed. Pre season it would always be second string anyway, with academy players getting a shot with second string/fringe players, as the internationals are eased back in to a full pre season programme latter. Maybe some returning from injury. But with the RWC this year, all the RWC squad will be in camp and not with Leinster.

Is it though sheer lack of youtube rugby content that this guy is popular? Nothing about why our players are crap and that the levels below aren’t doing much to rectify that.

I live in London at th moment (over 300k people). Just three schools in the region had boys rugby this spring and it looks like the club didn’t get enough players to run u17 or u19 boys teams for this summer.

Historically, the South West and West has had a lot of rugby and even some decent teams. It gets little attention from RO, none (?) from RC. The furthest west the RO program goes is Guelph, and I think they even held a West selection camp in Whitby - which is EAST of Toronto! (It may also have been cancelled due to wet fields...).

Coach development is still sorely lacking and those dwindling numbers of school and club coaches are either still doing things the old school way and/or adopting systems that prescribe rugby rather than teach them the game’s nuances.

Nick Blevins!?

Is that more or less than what’s existed before? Good for your area if it’s growing! It doesn’t sound like the supposed Mecca of Victoria is growing with Oak Bay and SMUS still dominating, the school with an ‘academy’ not catching up and girls still struggling to field sevens teams.

There’s seemingly significant shrinking in several parts of Ontario.

There was a lot of hubbub about Nova Scotia schools cancelling and then reinstating rugby, but it seems there’s virtually no club rugby for teens there.

The vast majority of our rugby playing kids get two or three months of instruction and a season that’s a little more than a month long. I think expanding the club season through sping/summer or summer/fall even at the risk of schools rugby, and ensuring the coaching is top notch is one way to provide a better experience and more talent for the next level. As is, most of our physical specimens never get exposed to the sport or don’t get decent enough instruction/game time to keep them interested and allow the prospects to make an overseas academy or earn a pro contract.

If Georgia can give just a relative few a leg up and see their u20s shock bigger rugby nations, we can do more with the pockets of dedicated players and coaches we have.

Posted this in another forum but I think it can fit here.

Assuming all are healthy, this is what I would expect our line up vs Italy to be.

1. Buydens
2. Howard/Piffero
3. Tienery
4. Baille
5. Olmstead
6. Blanchet
7. Rumball
8. Ardron

9. Mack
10. O'Leary
11. Paris
12. Hearn
13. DTH
14. Hassler
15. Evans (?) maybe Sauder

I expect a 6/2 split on the bench:

16. Howard/Piffero
17. Brouwer? maybe Barker
18. Ilnicki
19. Beukeboom
20. Campbell
21. Heaton
22. McRorie (9/10 cover)
23. Tarinor

Bolded are those playing at a high level in either Europe or SANZAR. Virtually all others are playing in MLR and are getting meaningful game time. In addition, Italy has a terrible schedule. They will play Namibia 4 days before us, this makes this game winnable for us. Yes, we will need to be at our best and be a bit lucky.

Interesting article from PJ. I can’t believe schools like Magee no longer field teams. They won provincial titles, produced Internationals.

The proliferation of 7s scares me. I think that more and more kids see rugby as 7s. I’m not sure how many rugby players you develop through 7s, and I wonder how many 15s players you lose to 7s. It says in the article players at schools that play both codes will have to choose.

7s is on TV, it’s easier to learn, it’s less punishing, it’s less commitment. All things that appeal to coming generations.

I thought i read next year in British Columbia

Rugby sevens become a BC highschool sport played in spring season directly competing with Rugby 15.
Highschool kids can only register in one of the two....
Basically i think schools would offer one of the two sports but not both...... thats just my guess.

How do you like them apples.....

Bigger schools like Carson might offer two, and the privates may run own sevens series allowing kids to play both.

Long term schools will gravitate to 7s. Cheaper, easier, more competition in some areas.

Rugby will no longer be the sport where there is a spot for everyone. And kids who play 7s won’t likely play club rugby, and the problematic disconnect between playing school and playing adult rugby will grow.

I don’t know the relationship between the BCRU and the BCSSRU but this will not help rugby.

I don't see Carson or top schools splitting their athletes.... as 7 and 15's will run in same season....
Private schools play in the same season as public schools so really same for them.

I do see smaller schools that can't run 15's choosing to run a . 7's team.. eg up north. Or in parts of vancouver now where rugby 15's has disappeared... I do see perhaps private christian schools going the 7's route again as they are smaller schools that might find the 7's easier..

Honestly i don't see it hurting 15's numbers in BC. It would attract a different group of kids currently not playing 15's in my opinion..

I don’t know the relationship between the BCRU and the BCSSRU but this will not help rugby.

You addressed 'spot for everyone' after this post, but that's the gist of it. Rugby was ideal for giving fat kids like me another sport besides football. I've checked in with friends who still play women's rugby in Victoria on something we'd talked about a few years ago ... the lack of tight five players who were actually from Victoria.

They've only had sevens for girls for nearly 10 years now? In my time there, with two clubs, we could only think of three players who grew up in Vic and played school rugby there. One was old enough to have played 15s at school. That one's retired by now and I think there might only be another one or two who made it through the 7s league. The rest played their rugby up Island, on the Mainland or are from another province (and several are on the other side of 30).

The point is that switching to 7s only runs the risk of not only having fewer players per school as potential club players, but also FAR fewer tight five types.

As for boys' rugby in Victoria, there doesn't seem to be any growth ...

15s teams:
Premier League (1 team... aka one of the few schools with the 'resources' to play pumped up Shawnigan and St Georges)

Oak Bay

Senior Tier 1 (4 teams, 1 exhibition)

Claremont
SMUS (private school with pedigree that can't even compete with Shawnigan or Oak Bay)
Belmont (School District 62's rugby academy)
GNS (also in CW territory)
Reynolds (exhibition only)

Sevens-only
Esquimalt High (has an academy program, but not enough for 15s?)

... Vic High and Spectrum used to have rugby, and I'm not sure about Lambrick Park or Mount Doug (which has a massive football program, and may be anti-rugby... but is anyone trying to break down that barrier?). There's also a Catholic high school without.

In SD63, I think Parkland and Stellys (for sure the latter) used to have rugby. In SD62, there's one other secondary school that doesn't have rugby.

So 5 (I don't count Reynolds) high schools out of 15 potential that have 15s, with one of those (Oak Bay) being dominant over the next best (SMUS) and a gap between them and the rest. This is the back yard of our "Centre of Excellence". I have seen the Royal Naval College of Canada's yearbook from the early 1920s and it has rugby results. I am pretty sure there were as many schools playing, and possibly even one more because RNCC played Oak Bay, Vic High, SMUS was two schools back then (St Michaels and The University School), and possibly Esquimalt had a team, too, because it's been around since 1915.

Image

I think of things like this when I see the #growthegame tag being tossed around and people still trolling out the line "fastest growing game in Canada" ... yeah, nah.

I assume that. Evans must be too then. I know he has had an injury plagued season with the Pirates and struggled to nail down a spot after his return but would still be surprised if he doesn't get a chance to make the squad in the PNC. Personally I thought he was the most in danger to losing a WC spot for 2019 (from the 2015 group).

and nice to see 11 Arrows given the opportunity. Also 7 Seattle Seawolves!! I knew we had a few on the club, but great stuff. Thank goodness for the MLR, I know it's not the highest quality of rugby but surely waaay better than the alternative(s) available to these guys if MLR didn't exist.

Yeah it has to be. Apparently DSD has done very well at Seattle and has probably salvaged his WC chances. Fair play to him, hopefully he goes well in the PNC. Tienery's case is still very strange, hopefully he lands on his feet somewhere.

As best as I can tell, we are probably looking at a backline of: 10. O'Leary, 11. Hassler 12. Barton/Hearn(?) 13. DTH, 14. Paris 15. Nelson. bench: Trainor/Hearn, Parfrey/Lloyd

For the start of the PNC. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see McRorie as the 9/10 cover.

Holy shit that looks a lot better than 2 months ago. Two months ago, this is what we were thinking:

- DTH injured
- Hassler in retirement
- Will he pick Paris?
- Will he pick O'Leary?
- Who will be our FB with Sauder injured and Evans battling injuries?

What a change.

It is a good set of backs. Unfortunately, you are not selecting the squad. Put McRorie at #9 and the team would have three quality kickers on the field. Switch Hassler and Paris at #11 and #14.
