Hask Lions inclusion a joke

Post by ragyboy »

I'm sure James Haskell is a good bloke to have in a tour party, full of bants and a great guy to keep spirits up. There is also an argument that his experience will be beneficial although quite how many rookies there are on tour to benefit from this experience is debatable (he'd be far better used in this role on the Argie tour)

The Lions is serious business. It's the best players in each position that you need. Haskell is at the end of his career, lacking a yard of pace for any of the back-row positions, and frankly out of form.

With Billy V's withdrawal surely you look for a like-for like replacement and pick a specialist 8. (If either Faletau or Stander goes down early on we're looking pretty thin in that position)
So who are the form 8s ? Thomas Waldrom for my money is a shoe-in, one of the most consistent and hard-working players in the Premiership (also knows his way to the try line) He's a better rugby player than Haskell hands down. There, I've said it. Must have upset someone in the RFU.
Then there's Nathan Hughes. Not quite a Billy V but did an admirable job filling his boots when given the chance. What about Ben Morgan ?
Even if you're ignoring the specialist position and just picking a back row utility man then Robshaw is a safer pair of hands who contributes far more.

How the hell 'Brand Hask' has blagged his way on to that plane is beyond me. The selection blunder of the year !

Ashley Johnson is a capped springbok, this isn't an invitatonal 15 mate.

The one thing I can say about James is that even though he may be average he will leave everything on the field and I can't ask for much more than that.

He's only a few months older than Jonny Sexton!

Where in this context average equates to playing the vaunted aussie backrow off the park on their home turf for a three match series.

Haskell hasn't "blagged" himself anywhere. The selectors obviously feel he has more to offer than the others you name.
Morgan may well have been more a like for like selection. But Waldrom FFS and Hughes looks a shadow of the player he was last season.

Already played for England so bona fide qualified. He's a busy, barrelling, effective, intelligent 8 and who better to understand the psyche of what they're up against in NZ.

I'm not a James Haskell fan (that much is obvious) I wouldn't even have him in an England squad these days, but come on Lions fans ! There's got to be better choices to replace Billy V !

I did. He ran upright into contact a lot, made a lot of yards off one carry in space, barely offloaded at all, and gave the ball away cheaply a few times. He works hard and that will always stand him in credit but he's not the dominant force he was before this season.

Haskell is going because he can cover 6, 7 and 8. Waldrom and Morgan only cover 8, Hughes can play 6 or 8 but his best international form hasn't equalled Hask at his best yet and the other options are Scottish.

Come on guys, The Lions (tm) (r) is not about rugby, it's a merchandise-selling brand. The brand knows it's on a hiding to nothing against the All Blacks (tm) (r) so there are no marginal gains to be had by splitting hairs over which sub-par nr 8 gets to wear the jersey.

But THE HASK - he is a brand too. Sells books, sets social media on fire...so him in a Lions jersey makes perfect sense.

This is not a selection, it's a business merger.

Didn't play too badly. But is so upright going to contact that he is becoming easier to defend against.
Bit of a penalty machine and to be honest looks absolutely knackered at the moment.

My bad on the OP. I do get Hughes and Johnson mixed up occasionally, knew exactly who I meant it's just my levels of apoplexy over Hask's call-up caused a Freudian slip.
