Really intriguing edition this year with shorter punchier stages and fewer time trial kms.
Froome's coming in undercooked which is a change on previous years but looks fairly deliberate.
If the Dawg can keep it upright I think he's still very much the man to beat.

Hard to call this year. Sky have an unbelievable team but Froome is in very questionable shape.

Of the stages, Stage 9 looks brutal and 12 and 17 also pretty tough. A couple of the stages have Steve Cummings written all over them, especially with the form he has come back in.

Interesting GC comp shaping up

Froome - Questionable form
Porte - Great form, questionable GC endurance
Quintana - Questionable recovery/form from Giro
Contador - Just Questionable
Valverde - Questionable backing from team

Anyone else with a realistic shout?

Any unsubstantiated accusations against any rider on this thread will invoke a ban until at least the end of the tour

Pinot and Bardet will feature but just won't have the support.

I guess Chaves at Orica Scott is an outside chance too

No. It ruins these threads which should be about the sport and not about who can make the edgiest accusations without any evidence. Feck off to the cyclingnews clinic if you want to partake in that crap

Pinot is going along to please sponsors and hunt stages, no more. His focus was the Giro this year.

Bardet and Aru have to be in contention with so little TT in the race. Aru's form is not so much questionable as unknowable, since he really hasn't ridden much.

Cant see anybody else as a likely winner, but the GC will be at least impacted by Majka, Chavez/Yates, Dan Martin, Fuglsang (also in flying form), Ion Izagirre (podium dark horse), G Thomas, Meintjes. Someone in that group might switch focus to the polka dot after losing a lot of time on an early stage.

Edit; forgot Uran, who will have good climbing support from his team, although Pierre Rolland will most likely be up the road in the break rather than helping.

^ this,

For the Giro, Pinot was going for a spot on the podium, but the TT killed him ( lost 2 minutes at the first one ) this is why he went for a couple stages later. For this TDF he'll be happy with a stage victory.

Bardet prepared all year for this Tour , we'll see.

Why. It's tedious as fudge. If I recall correctly we had the same rule last year.

I'm no ciclying expert, but Le Tour always makes for a pleasant watch, specially with the original french broadcast.

ESPN shows extracts in spanish, but they just shout a lot about the colombian riders.

Big GC days early this year. Stage 5: La Planche des Belles Filles. Stage 9 looks savage.

I've never seen a TT position as extreme as Castroviejo's - utterly ridiculous how flexible he must be to hold it

Dennis is not there.

The first stage is pretty wide open IMO. Martin, Van Emden, Castroviejo, Küng, Roglic should all be very strong. Porte has also been sensational in the ITT in 2017 and easily beat Martin last month at the Dauphine.

My pick is Roglic.

Good calls. Martin hasn't won a TT since he became WC, has he not? Also, his TDF record isn't great. I'll stick with Castro.

Without doing some testing its almost impossible to say. I was more talking about how extreme they are positioned.

I also can't believe Castroviejos position isn't compromising the power he can lay down
