DUNKIRK

Post by capt hurricane »

The wife and I were lucky enough to have tickets to a preview of this movie last night. Even got to see it in IMAX.

So, what can I say about it?

How can I put this?

GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE, IT IS FANTASTIC!

Best war movie I have ever seen, absolute genius. Believe the hype, it was seriously that good!

The notion that there were no black people on the shores of Northern France in the mid 20th century is laughable, what what!

Whilst the Kiwi punched well above their weight in WW2 they weren't in France for this one. NZ was mainly involved in the Western Desert, Tunisia, Sicily then Italy. I'm sure some of the AB's were involved in those operations.

Having said that, was any AB's flying for the RAF in this period?

I listened to the WW2 podcast on the German advance through the Ardennes forest the other day. If this portrayal is correct then the French military failed miserably to provide any real resistance.

I dont know. They were most likely too busy surrendering while the Brits were too busy running away.

Apparently, you see no Germans in that movie and French for about 10 seconds.

Sounds grand and realistic.

The Irish have no shame. It surprises me that they continue to contribute to WW2 threads considering they turned a blind eye on the war and the atrocities that were occurring across Europe at that time.

Let's not forget that they were also great friends with Hitler

35,000 died fighting for Britain in WW1. See us Irish, we aren't stupid, we don't make the same mistake twice.

Now that’s not fair to the average Poilus at the time.

The Brits and French were not so much outfought as outmanoeuvred – when they managed to get to grips with the Germans they give a good account of themselves. Read up on Hannut, Stonne and Moncornet as examples.

The problem was that the Head Cheeses were caught flat footed and when the Germans got within their deciscion cycle they could not adapt, the individual Battalions and Squadrons fought well, but the overall command and control failed and you had two (after the Belgians threw in the towel leaving a huge hole in the front) armies fighting with their own agenda and within those armies there was no glue to hold the various parts together.

If you read further into this period the tale is full of extremely brave last ditch stands by French and British troops at the wrong time and the wrong place.

This. Uninformed French and British accusing each other of cowardice and running away during this period is pathetic.
