Chester Bennington of Linkin Park hangs himself age 41

Post by Chuckles1188 »

Laugh all you like but I am devastated. Linkin Park were an enormous part of my childhood, and were some of the best gigs I have ever been to, as a kid or an adult. Awful, awful news

Not a fan of his music in the slightest, but he recently sang at Chris Cornell's funeral. What a waste.

He had a dreadful childhood, was sexually abused as a boy, parents split when he was 11, got really into drugs, got clean, got successful, got into booze, quit, and now hangs himself. People used to laugh at Crawling and it was certainly melodramatic, but he wasn't writing that stuff because he was pretentious, he was writing it because he was miserable

If anyone has ever come across the "Craaaaaawlliiiiinnng iiiiiiiinnn my skiiiiiin" song, that's Chester.

Anyway, I'll stop going on about it now. I imagine there are one or two people on the bored who will be at least reasonably familiar with LP. They were pretty huge for a brief while there, sold big concerts.

Bugger. Did't listen to a huge amount of Linkin Park but In the End was a very good song.

He's a bit of a joke for a lot of people, wrote very stereotypical angsty teen music.

I enjoyed Linkin Park mostly Hybrid Theory. Bennington could really sing. Saw him live early in their careers, were excellent.

Today is Chris Cornell's birthday.

Awful news :(

Saw them live in Cologne, one of the best concerts I've been to. A big part of the soundtrack of my youth. Chester had a great voice; generally he'd belt them out but he did have a unique sound and was a good singer.

My friends saw them a few weeks ago at a festival; I remember thinking at the time that Linkin Park was so solid for a rock band and that they were aging well and staying in the game. Mocker gods in action once more, though not sure if you can blame them for suicide.

Gutted.

Just realised Chester was good mates with Cornell. Wonder if Chris going pushed him over the edge.

Shit news he was more talented than people gave him credit for, a master of reinvention he did a great cover of rolling in the deep. LP never escaped the manufactured rock band rumours and never really had much credibility as a result.

A shitload of teenagers didn't care about their credibility, on the other hand. We just thought they were amazing.

Going back through their back catalogue it really rams home just how much of their material, especially the early stuff, was about substance abuse and loss. And how versatile they were. Even on a single album they would throw three or four different types of song structures and sounds together. They weren't 100% chameleons or anything but there's a huge variety in there. And his voice will always have a visceral effect on me.

Hybrid Theory was 2001 iirc, I would have been 16.

Still enjoy some of the stuff on it.

Like I said to Anon, Linkin Park were a standing reference for moody teen bollocks for a very long time.

Very sad, hard to believe someone in his position could just ward off all the criticism. Fuck me they took some abuse.

I think they were more loved on the continent. Yes, they did relate to teenage angst, but not to the level of Evanescence etc.

Man, Evanescence. That takes me back almost as much as Linkin Park does. Though not quite as much. But yes, LP weren't the absolute extreme of that trope. The Craaaawliiiiing bit was the major source of the grief they got

RIP. They had some men tracks but their good ones were ducking brilliant. Him and Shindo tried something different with LP and it really came off for a while. Damn Shame!

And that was a great tune. Evanescence were a 2-hit wonder, they have nothing on LP.

I remember seeing Linkin Park supporting Metallica in the RDS in 2002 or 2003. They go bottled off stage. Good times.

I really liked Evanescence's singles, but yeah it's not even close. Man LP could write a song. I would say their first three proper albums are all really strong, though there's a definite downward curve

Yeah, thrash fans were never likely to come onboard with what LP were bringing

Me and my know it all moody longhaired greasy teenage mates used to make fun of them for their lack of credibility. I look back at 16 year old me and I shudder.

It's sad to hear about his passing. They did some stuff that was pretty innovative.
