Van Halen sang about hot rods, hot chicks and catching sexual diseases cause they lived it. Their first six albums from 78 - 84 contain some of the greatest riffs and rock music ever commuted to vinyl. They redefine rock but arguably spawned many poor imitators.
RIP Chester. I really liked that song LP did for the first Transformers movie.
Hmmmmm....not sure about David Lee Roth redefining the role of the front man.

Brought the hammer on/pull off tapping style into the mainstream. He was very far from the first to use it though either in rock or other genres.

Popularised it all to the masses. Arguably one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. But because he was a young kid from sunny California and in a band with a "singer" who was as much a stage clown as an artist it was all at odds with being classified as a serious muso.
......and then there was the inventing, tone chasing, hot rodding and tinkering and collaboration he did with the equipment and manufacturers of the day.

I do respect him but I would add that for all the guitar olympian hystrionics they just didn't write great songs. It was all very straight rock, albeit with the ripped off swagger cock rock of Plant and an overlay of guitar wankery. Just misses the mark.

Not to my ears. You can critique Eddie for starting the guitar shred movement but he was nothing like that. Very melodic, drop dead timing, perfect pitch and soul tone and probably the most powerful right hand in rock (sorry Malcom Young). But we all have our own views. Personally I class early Van Halen right up there. Eddie wrote some unforgettable music.

Love Brian May .. an original...and a great friend of Eddies. Brian idolises him. Personally I think David Gilmour is the greatest British rock guitarist. Clapton was great in the 60's but once he stopped heroin and booze he was very bland.

No musicians in the varied styles I listen to ever claimed them as an influence, and I don't think it was due to being too cool to mention. They just don't register.

I was in a band. A bass player with a keen line in sweet harmonied backing vocals. Anyway I was in that band and I met a woman, let's call her Yoko Ono, who stole me away from said band just before we were to play support for Deep Purple.
