Interested in seeing how a few players get through as they recover from injury.

WP vs. EP this weekend. Jean-Luc du Plessis and Frans Malherbe making their return from injury. Seems like a decent WP team.

Cape Town - Rolling substitutions will be available to coaches for the first time in senior professional rugby in South Africa in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge, which kicks off with six matches this weekend.

This decision was taken following law workshops held by SA Rugby’s referee department in Johannesburg and Cape Town with the SuperSport Rugby Challenge head coaches from all the provincial unions (the Blue Bulls were unable to attend), where this use of a law amendment was unanimously agreed to.

Teams will be allowed to use 12 rolling substitutions during each match, of which four must be reserved for players in the front row.

At the workshops, it was also agreed that any team that causes uncontested scrums, will be reduced to 14 players on the field until the end of the match, while coaches will have the option of selecting four or five forwards on their seven-man bench.

“The workshops were very interesting as it gave us an opportunity to listen to the coaches and how they see things happening on the field from a law and refereeing angle,” explained Banks Yantolo, SA Rugby’s referee manager.

“The decision to allow rolling substitutions, which we’re already using in our Under-19 Provincial Championship, was done with player welfare and safety, especially at scrums, as well as reducing the likelihood of uncontested scrums to protect the integrity of the game, in mind.”

Prince of flyhalves is back.
Cape Town - Flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis was in fine form on his return from injury as he guided Western Province to victory over the EP Elephants on Sunday.

It was Du Plessis's first competitive match for over a year after battling with a hip injury that required surgery in the United States.

Now, finally, he seems to be back to full fitness and he scored two tries in WP's 59-12 SuperSport Challenge win against the Elephants in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

"Coming back, especially after such a lengthy lay-off, was always going to be an obstacle and a challenge," the 23-year-old was quoted as saying on SuperSport after his comeback.

"But I must give credit to (coach, John Dobson) Dobbo, the coaching staff and the conditioning coach because this team is well-conditioned.

"In the first game of the season you never know what to expect but I think we were pretty well prepared mentally and physically for the game, and for me I just wanted to be out there and get as many minutes as possible."

Du Plessis lasted 76 minutes before being replaced on Saturday.

There was more good news for the Stormers with tighthead prop Frans Malherbe also getting some valuable minutes under the belt.

The 27-year-old, who has also been out for a long time with a neck injury, got 56 minutes before being replaced at Wolfson Stadium.

The Stormers, who have slipped to the bottom of the South African Conference in Super Rugby after Saturday's 24-17 loss to the Sharks, host the Rebels in Cape Town on Friday.

Seems to be quite a massive op that he had. Hopefully the youngster is sorted out now but it seems he might need another hip replacement in future
Why were you out for a year and two months?

It’s started off with what they thought was a slight tear in the groin and then it still wasn’t right so they came back and operated on the hip. Afterwards I went to the States and had an operation on my pubic bone. Then I came back and rehabbed and now it seems like it’s finally cleared. The full diagnosis was I had slight hip impingement, so the hip had to be done. We’d hoped that it would take a bit of stress off the pubic bone but in the end it didn’t. When I went to America they picked up that my groins and stomach muscles were actually tearing off my pubic bone, so they had to reattach all those.

So does this mean your hip replacement is done already?

I’ll probably have to get it done again! But to be honest I won’t mind much if it gives me another 10 years of playing.

Agreed. Looking forward to seeing him and his cousin again. Our midfield needs some creativity. EW is just so gash. Zero creativity and then relies on his stupid grubbers or chip kicks when he's stuck without options.

I don't get how EW is in the team. Barely Currie Cup level.

Problem is we have zero other options in the midfield. JJ and Kriel are the options there...

I believe so. I think he also played wing in his SR debut season and remember not rating him then. I was promised by some old folks on here that he would develop and be a great. :x

"Justin Phillips is also coming back into the mix after his rib injury. In terms of the other guys playing for the Provincial Challenge side, Jean-Luc [du Plessis] is back in the mix and he has come off that long-term injury and he is up for selection. Whether he gets chosen or not is up to Robert [Fleck].

"Frans [Malherbe] is training with us. It is his second week with us so our depth is improving and we are getting some numbers back, which is a good thing," Winter added.

Thanks for the info Jens.
I still wonder why duP didn't play this past weekend for some added game time. Risk of injury again maybe knowing Willemse is going soon.

Played a few games there for the Stormers in 2016.

The more important question is whether he can last for more than a few games
