Margaritis Schinas, spokesperson for the Commission, issued the warning in a press conference in which he also quoted the Spice Girls as he urged the UK to reveal “what they want, what they really, really want” from Brexit.

His Irish border remarks were dismissed by the DUP as “more belligerent bluffing from the EU”, while a spokesperson for the Irish Taoiseach said “We will not accept a hard border on this island and therefore we are not planning for one. This will be more difficult to achieve without the Withdrawal Agreement and would require very difficult discussions with our EU partners.”

As is your refusal to answer two straightforward questions.

Rfurlong at least has the guts to admit Varadkar is helpless to resist

Why is varadkar/Ireland being unable to avoid border checks (to protect the integrity of the SM) even a ‘thing’ for you?

What argument do you think it helps you win?

Have you noticed any acceptance of it yet on Ireland’s part? It may become inevitable, but we’ll keep working hard to avoid it .....

Ireland cannot ‘accept’ a hard border because it’s a co-guarantor of the GFA. It’s just a pity that the other co-guarantor government, is run by thick cvnts

So, let me get this straight, Ireland are saying that they don't want a hard border for movement of goods and services(there will be no hard border for movement of people because of the CTA) in Ireland, but if the UK Brexit without an agreement they will have to put one up, as it will now become an EU/3rd country border. Seems reasonable. And in fact the proposal to effectively make NI a FTA in both the EU and the UK seems even more reasonable.

And, even though one of the Leave organisations main manifesto promisies was to take control of their borders, the UK propose to keep their land border to the EU completely open, charging no tarrifs, nor having any checks whatsoever in the case of a hard brexit. Taking back control my arse.

Pull the other one.

There will be convoys of buses from Dublin Airport/Port to Newry taking advantage of the backdoor soft border to the UK. Dublin will probably get direct flights to the subcontinent !

More frolicking unicorns.

The UK will not introduce any new checks or controls on goods moving across the land border into Northern Ireland if the UK leaves the European Union without a deal, it has been announced.

It's even in the same f*ckin article.

"However, tariffs will be payable on goods moving from the EU into the rest of the UK via Northern Ireland under a schedule of rates also released this morning."

Similarly the idea there will be no checks whatsoever is bonkers. Some will still happen - away from the borders and and intelligence driven rather randomised. I think what we may see is much of the physical inspection moving to the "border" between NI and the UK.

Ain't that the truth !

Any deal with the US, will (a) Not so much be selling the family silver; as selling your organs for harvest; whether your alive or dead, & (b) Be configured to make any future FTA between the UK & EU, much, much more difficult.

Luckily for everyone; the White House doesn't have a Trade Deal in it's gift; & the Irish Lobby in the US is Cross-Party, & exists in both houses.

This goes to the heart of the GFA bullshit.

The UK is bending over backwards to be constructive about the border issue while staying true to the fundamental principle of the GFA. Instead of ripping the arse out of the sovereignty provisons of the GFA - you know the real ones that actually exist - it's preferred approach is to keep the NI border as open as possible and accept trade friction within its borders as the price of maintaining what is - and this can't be stressed enough - only one comparitively minor (it's not even mentioned in the GFA ) part of a much wider set of committments intended facilaitate dual identity. It's a huge political and economic concession to address a largely confected issue.

It's beyond laughable that the Irish narrative is this border proposal - and not the sovereignty grab in the f*ckin backstop - rips up the GFA. That the ROI chooses to pursue a sovereignty grab through the backstop rather than trying to work with the UK on this proposal speaks volumes about who really cares about the GFA.

Now, you guys might be able to persuade me issue here is the ROI really doesn't have a choice in all this as the EU has you by the nuts. I say might because (as this thread shows), there's an awful lot of gleeful, sub-Celtic bullshit going on. But then your beef is with the EU not the UK.

If you want people like me to believe the ROI really thinks the GFA is at risk, you should actually behave like it is and embrace solutions that don't rip the heart out of it.
