Well, he is convicted, so drop me in the "Rolf is guilty" camp.backrow wrote:I should say that I am firmly in the 'Rolf is innocent' camp, I'm from Maidenhead and there was never a whiff of scandal or rumours that he's a dodgy type, unlike fellow Berkshire resident at the time Timmy Mallet.
Rolf used to do school fetes and book readings in the library type things - was fine and had lot of time for everyone, and no 'come and look at my etchings' type grooming.
from what I recall, was extremely flimsy case, not on par with Ched Evans for miscarriage of justice but not far off. think he entered no plea, and there were some images of models who may or may not have been under 18, but were not from sites noted for child porn.Farva wrote:Well, he is convicted, so drop me in the "Rolf is guilty" camp.backrow wrote:I should say that I am firmly in the 'Rolf is innocent' camp, I'm from Maidenhead and there was never a whiff of scandal or rumours that he's a dodgy type, unlike fellow Berkshire resident at the time Timmy Mallet.

Only 2 or 3 people made the claims and were aged around 16, and ultimately became a he-said she-said scenario. I honestly think were he a true peado, then there would have been more than 2 or 3 people saying it. He admitted to nobbing his daughters friend for several years, and clearly knew her before she was 18, and that must have played a big part in his conviction.
he was also let out rather quickly, and aquitted on a bunch of other charges too.

The classical path to paedophilia is
- Recognising an attraction to young people in yourself
- Legitimising it internally ("s/he is lonely, s/he is a friend, I am lonely/misunderstood")
- ...as a consequence disregarding social and legal norms as "not applicable in this case"
- Creating a scenario in which is acceptable to be close to the child
- Gaining the trust of the child and of other adults in the situation
- Abusing
- Swearing the victim to secrecy through emotional blackmail - "you don't want me to go to prison do you?", "you don't want your friends to know", and especially "no-one is going to believe you"
And this behaviour tends to repeat, i.e. once the offender has gotten away with the act, it becomes easier to overcome any fears or revulsion.
I didn't hear the evidence but this APPEARS to be exactly the allegation with regard to the friend of the daughter.
Look, there's SHED loads of this out there, far more than is widely reported. It is not JUST blokes either (though males are very over-represented). We need to be VERY careful to listen to those who say that they have been victims of this cos, I believe, they almost always have been.

I just think folk don't realise how pernicious and widespread this behaviour is, I do think that high profile cases have generally helped in uncovering the scale of abuse but that does not mean that there are no more victims to come forward or that there is less happening out there.
In fact, I would make the assumption that many women (perhaps most women) could relate some story of being exposed at, or groped or worse while they were of school age. I expect most of them don't want to remember the experience let alone retell it in public.

I have to ask myself why men and women want to spend their spare time in shorts being scout and cub leaders around young people.
But they are CRB checked I hear you say? Ian Huntley managed to outwit the CRB check system by changing his name before applying to Soham School for the caretakers job.

I'd imagine the persona he presents to the wider public at such events as you reference, especially when there are large rugby playing men around, is somewhat different to when he has the smell of prey in his nose!
Fair enough, but the point still stands that he's much less likely to be a gropey lecherous shit in full view of a crowd than he is in more manageable circumstances.backrow wrote:maybePornDog wrote:Girl I used to know used work on Saturday morning television here in Ireland and she came home from work after he had been on wouldn't shut up about what a horrible lecherous old pervert he was. I was more referring to the school fetes and stuff he did in the 80's when I was little, not my present large rugby playing man size.
I'd err on the side of most, if you move the goalposts slightly. Doesn't have to be physical, plenty of men enjoy staring at schoolies and making them uncomfortable etc which is all part of it.backrow wrote:many women, perhaps - most ? nahManInTheBar wrote:OK, it is very very exceptional for an adult of 45 NOT to be in a position of power over a 17 or 18 year old. Not all are dodgy. I spent years in Cubs and Scouts, I was a very sexy child and no-one abused me.Varsity Way wrote: I have to ask myself why men and women want to spend their spare time in shorts being scout and cub leaders around young people.
The CRB didn’t exist in 2001, but nevertheless in Ian Huntley's case we are talking about “police intelligence” that didn’t lead to a conviction. I don’t believe that a CRB check would pick that up anyway.Varsity Way wrote:Good points.ManInTheBar wrote:He admitted only the bit beyond 18, but was not believed because the girl said otherwise. I was VERY surprised that he was found guilty.
