If he isn't the best winger in world rugby (maybe Ioane) he certainly walks into a world 15. What a player he has become.

Yeah that's fair, just having some fun. Stockdale's a really good player as well. If you were picking the Lions right now they'd be your likely test starters

May and Tuisova in a World XV.

Flop on the ball 3 times and miss a tackle that leads to a try

Not in my world XV

He's a flopping merchant. His last 6 tries have come from a combined 12 yards out. Flopped over v SA in the Summer from a grubber, flopped over from 2 yards v Aus in the Autumn, flopped over 3 times today.

Give me Ashton every fur king day of the week

He’s no Ben Smith.

Jonny May has been great for a while now not just the since the summer. Also not just his try scoring but his much improved defense, his relentless kick chasing and being very solid under the high ball. Also the fact that he is electrically fast and skins teams from kick throughs is a strength not a weakness though he has scored many from his own brilliance too (including the 2nd try today).

That's a bit like saying Gary Lineker was a crap striker because all his goals were from 4 yards out.

It takes skill to be in the right place at the right time.

Jonny May also has pretty decent skill to nonchlently touch down one handed and scoop and place like he did today .
Not seen an England winger stand up his opposition like that for a long time , Jason Robinson most probably

Dunno he got owned a few times today by a pretty green centre playing wing... :|

He's a good finisher. But it's easy to look good when your team has total control of the game and is almost permanently on the front foot.

He's beating opponents to the ball with raw pace, you'll remember his try v Wales last year, although one of his tries today he stood up his defender beautifully when it looked like the chance had gone.

So I suppose from the evidence in this thread that Clive is expecting a fairly comfortable win for Wales in the next round?

The only international coach that would drop May for Ashton against Wales is Gatland. Splash not enough gas these days, slower than many of his teammates including Ford. May may not be the best but he is probably the fastest. May on the grubber 3+1 assist/4. Ashton on the grubber 0/1 (that wasn't a penalty try).
The Welsh back three won't be concerned about Ashton beating them outside or on a sprint for the grubber

Yes because the subjective form of one player is the decisive factor in a match involving upwards of 40 players

I'm not sure that's true having seen him play in the Top 14 last season, I'd say he's faster than Nowell too. But they were both on the field today so it's not a case of either-or.

I would like to observe that Jonny May's ball dotting down style is utterly dreadful and makes me shit myself every time.

You'd think he'd have had a lot of practice at falling on it over the line at full speed. Two ropey examples today.

After all the talk I expected to hear a real thicko in his interview, but he was surprisingly lucid and tempered.

I like Ashton but May is top class at the mo. His one on one beat of the French wing was class. Should he have flipped the others up with his toe, did a black flip and touched down with a cultured finger? Or perhaps have splashed?

He's very well-trained when it comes to media work. Any rugby player who has ever trained with him has a ream of stories about his bizarre tendencies. Think Tinds was saying on House of Rugby that May used to pretend some random inanimate object was a chicken and would feed it popcorn. He's absolutely barking mad, but knows his rugby (outside the scrum anyway)

Takes everything in the air, frightening speed, defence is good enough, positioning sorted.

There was a moment in the match when I'd have liked to see him really back himself and have a go on the outside, but iirc, he cut in. He was in a bit tight, but there were three forwards on the wing (one may have been Basteraud) and 15-20 of space outside them.

He'd have had to run back a bit, sevens stile, to get some speed up, but I reckon he could have gassed them.

Very good for England, but I reckon Ioane will make more out of a tight situation than May does. That said, he did break the ankles of the French 14 so not just a straight line sprinter.

Best wingers:

1. Ben Smith
2. Jacob Stockdale
3. Jonny May
4. Reiko Ioane

Amazing standard across those 4.

Tuisova, Ashton and Naholo all in the debate for me.

I reckon he could displace the Rotherham first choice winger if he keeps this up.

Which, to be fair, is basically all anyone needs to aim for.

Smith is an amazing fullback playing wing.

As others have said, you need to consider Tuisova in that list, and Diyanti and Naholo arent far off either, just need a but more defensive starch.
