DUNE MOVIE 2019: It could be epic...

Post by flaggETERNAL »

 Or an absolute stinking pile of shit. Huge, huge fan of the books, yes ALL of them. Dennis Villeneuve will be directing it and by all accounts he's already got some big names and is in the process of getting more. By all accounts the film should be out some time in 2020.

CONFIRMED SO FAR

Timothee Chalamet as Mua'dib

Stellan Skaarsgard as Baron Harkonnen

Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica

Dave Bautista as Beast Rabban

Charlotte Rampling as Revered Mother Mohiam

Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho

CURRENTLY IN TALKS

Javier Bardem as Stilgar

Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto
Spoiler: show

Zendaya as Chani(if she does come aboard she's the perfect person for the role.

With it's reputation for being unfilmable it's heartening to see there are some very, very good people besides DV working on it.

Have you cruised through the Dune crew credits lately? Have you seen what good hands we’re in? Zero Dark Thirty and Lion DP Greig Fraser is behind the camera. Longtime Villeneuve collaborators, editor Joe Walker and production designer Patrice Vermette, are on board. Jacqueline West (The Revenant) and Bob Morgan (Inception) are designing the costumes. Hell! Yes!

Villeneuve is the man for the job

The rug that ties this room together is Villeneuve.

In a 2016 interview with Variety, Villeneuve described the chance to adapt Dune as “a longstanding dream,” and some have speculated that his enthusiasm for the project may have incentivized the Herbert estate to sell the rights to Legendary. “The ambition,” Villeneuve has said, “is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw.”

Villeneuve has the passion. But he also has the receipts. Villeneuve is the guy right now if you want somebody to transform esoteric sci-fi material to a visual medium. The Ted Chiang short story that Arrival is based on frequently varies in voice and tense in a way some might deem un-filmable. But complex source text be damned: the potboiler about linguistics and non-linear squid aliens was nominated for eight goddamn Oscars.

Haha...it'll be interesting to see who they can land for that role. Also, Irulan.

Irulan was a total non-entity in the 1980s one, but was about the female lead in the 2004 movie. So you have two extremes there.

No Emperor as of yet. The actor playing Baron Harkonnen looks perfect for the role. The chick playing Lady Jessica looks too young, the character has to be 35 minimum.

Yeah thought the same...Jessica Chastain may have been better? And Chalamet as Mua'dib? Not sold yet BUT he is a good actor.

Never seen the fan edit of Lynch's version till recently, tidies the theatrical shitheap up considerably but still too much for any one sitting.

Long as they split across two films I think they'll be ok.

I. CHOAM, Arrakis and fall of House Atreides
II. Rise of Mua'dib

Or make it a trilogy. Third part could be when they really get in to it on Arrakis showing the final battle is more detail maybe.

F.u.c.k yes, I dont even care if it is fairly shit. Dune is freakin awesome.
I tried reading some of the prequels/sequels penned by his son and that scifi author to try and close the story, which were shit beyond reckoning.

I keep hearing about this Dune, wonder if it's worth the time. ASOIAF was awesome but it took me a year to finish.

So I read the whole book series in the 80s a year or two before the Dune film icame out. Is this going to be a remake of that or of the much broader series? I am guessing remake and if that goes well, make another 5 films.

DV has said it won't be a remake.

When I read Dune as a spotty teenager it blew my mind. Saw the original film as soon as it came out and what a let down. 80% of it was actually quite good but the 20% that was awful ruined it. The particular spoiler being that dated rock guitar riff over the attack on the emperor’s ship. Ugh x(

Fingers crossed for this one.

Be interesting to see if they give Duncan Idaho a bit more to do since he's only in the book very briefly. Funny how he's only in it for a short time yet everyone seems to love him, so much so that he's back in the sequels much more substantially.

Same here. I think DV can do it. If he could adapt Arrival, which was an even more weirder story...

Love the books (the real ones, not the son & hack pulp cashgrab), but never warmed up to the miniseries. Still watched it because, well, it was there, but never could get the awful acting, costumes and scenery. If I remember correctly, I think it starts right from the first episode when a Bene Gesserit walks in corridors shaking her arms to make her robes flow like they do naturally in the Lynch movie... Not sure why Gius Helen Mohiam is dressed up as a fairy either. Then there's Giedi Prime, where cameras are rotated 45 degrees. Plot-wise, it's pretty close to the books but I wasn't particularly thrilled at the additional scenes making Irulan an actual player either. Messiah does a lot to characterise Irulan and she's nowhere near what they made her in the series.

Anyhow, it has the merit to exist, and for its sins, it does less weird stupid stuff than the movie (weirding modules?! *rain* on Arrakis at the end???!). Still a fan of the movie though, as despite some stupid stuff and some critical artistic failures (Ornithopters not being ornithopters, the green gas containment-suit Sardaukars), it gets a lot of the mood really really right and the artistic direction feels mostly pretty spot-on.

Jodorowsky's version, I tend to think it's a good thing we never got to see. He's just batshit-crazy and his very much Dune inspired Meta-Barons comic series shows the kind of universe-spanning nonsense he comes up with just so that he can top up the nonsense from the previous scene.

Looking forward to the new one at any rate, curious to see where it lands.

All it needs is Keanu Reeves.

Reeves plus Momoa = Oscars calling
;)

BTW Dune was fine.

All the rest of the books where pretty much overblown crap.

Hope it turns out really good, loved the original books.

If Villeneuve wants to make the star wars he never saw, he should have a crack at the Lensman series.

And on the subject of dream movies - Hyperion. Syfy channel were having a crack last I heard.

Not sure if Momoa is the right casting for Duncan Idaho, who I always pictured as average height and wiry rather than a brick shithouse. Still, not about to go incel fanboy over it.

Always pictured Idaho as being tall and broad to be honest. So I'm ok with Momoa. Should be interesting to see how he does.

I liked the Lynch version too. Not many film adaptations capture the tone and feel of a book. Filmmakers tend to choose not to and try too hard to re-create something that is their own.

I reckon they should have skipped straight to the 4th book. It's the most fitting for today's market.
