Was anybody else introduced to Dune by Iron Maiden in their youth?

I just remember the last song on Piece of Mind and wondering what it was about and then reading the book after reading the album liner notes.

I read all the way to Chapter House. I even tried one of the ones written by his son, but it was such utter trash I never did try any others.
All of them, including the ones his son did with KJA. Finally gave up somewhere through Jessica of Dune. The novels set between the original books were just milking it a shade too much.

I played Dune 2 on PC, a friend loaned it to me in primary school.
RTS game by the same studio that would eventually make C&C. Dune 2 was pretty much where they figured out the format.

My dad then told me about the books that it was based on, which he had in the house. Read Dune when I was quite young, then bailed on Messiah. Then read all the prequels as they were released when I was a teenager and went and read the original series through. Brian Herbert and KJA has long planned to digg the series, so I needed to read them all before they released their books to tie off that arc. They weren't great, TBF.

Ok. I am actually looking forward to this. Really like the atmosphere and styling, such as you can see in a trailer.

It's a straight remake? Why not use the opportunity to explore that universe?

Pink Floyd in the soundtrack, yay.

No pus-filled Baron Harkonnen, nay.

I reckon Timotei or whatever his name is will bring the girls like Leo did for Titanic. Could be big box office.
Also watched the Batman trailer. I honestly thought it was fan made - looks dodgy

Don't think I saw the Baron at all unless it was the guy rising out of the blood-looking pool.

You see Dave Bautista a lot so Beast Rabban must have a larger role.

I reckon they have, he'd make a good big baddie for the first one.
He definitely looks imposing.

Right. Been off PR for a while. Happy to see that there was some discussion around the trailer. I thought it was fantastic! Seeing fans going off on SM about the use of crusade over jihad and Jesus Christ some people just look for reasons to complain.

For me it would have been Fear is the Mindkiller, an industrial re-mix EP of songs from Soul of a New Machine by Fear Factory (I hated the re-mixes at the time, but I imagine it probably actually aged better than the album itself  ).

To Tame a Land is a great track, but you have to sit through Quest for File and Sun and Steel to get to it, so it tends to get missed when I change the CD at that point.

Maiden actually asked Frank Herbert if he was OK with them naming the song Dune (as originally intended) and he replied "No, I hate rock and roll bands and especially bands like Iron Maiden".

My mate was a proper electronics nerdy and experimented or read books, but didn't play sport. He introduced me to Dune (we went to see the 1985 film in the cinema together) and also some other authors, such as The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, etc.

Think I saw that mentioned somewhere already.

Meh. Either way, it's a religious war to force their beliefs on the unbelievers, the term used was more "appropriate" in the 60s than now. The meaning is still the same.
A bunch of robe-wearing nomadic sand people having a Jihad against the industrialised foreigners who are only there to plunder their natural resources is a bit on the nose, TBF.

Tbh, I'm not bothered by it, but it does seem a bit whipped to not say Jihad.

Keynes being a woman actually helps change up the cast a good bit.
Herbert had some very weird hangups about women.

Don't know that it's "whipped" - think it's more the understanding that you pretty much eliminate half your potential audience in the US if the good-guys are too obviously A-Rabs.

That's pretty whipped, bending the knee to that particular audience. An audience who, lets not forget, would go utterly mental were the opposite change to be made, even if they had no interest in seeing the actual movie.

If this is the biggest objection to the trailer then that's really pretty good when you think about it.

I did see some eejit on Twatter going on about the whole white saviour complex in Paul saving the Fremen. Which is the complete opposite of what Herbert was saying..

I had mono in uni, and thereby a lot of downtime, so I read them all, including six from the son, in chronological order. Then they published more and more and more. fudge that.

The first 8 from the son were OK, in that there was a story to be told.
Prequel trilogy was good. Definite well-definied story and characters that we already knew and loved, but who featured much more prominently than in the originals. Plus, shed much more light on their motivations, experiences etc.
Second trilogy explored the Butlerian Jihad. Interesting to explore something which is ever-present and constantly referenced in the other books, despite being ancient history. It's the founding mythology of their society. Plus, it introduced characters which were very important for...
Finishing the original saga. Think this was their original goal, but they needed to lay the groundwork for the Big Bad that was hinted at by Frank Herbert, but never had the chance to address.

After that, it was basically shading and filling in. Some stuff of Paul as a kid, some experiences of them on Arrackis, but not big things that were covered before. Value added felt quite low. Maybe I'll get my hands on them again and read through them for completion's sake. Not a priority, though.

Who'da thunk it from Zensunni Catholicism?

Neither the movie or the mini-series ever touched on the heavy religious syncretism present. The more I think about it the more genius the religious text is called "the Orange Catholic Bible".

This is true. After I finished with Frank Herbert's books I started on the first of the prequels, but I willed it out of existence after about 100 pages.
