SL bombings
SL bombings
Multiple bombings of churches and hotels in Colombo and nearby. I’m at Bandaranaike airport right now and only heard minutes ago.
Utterly horrible news.
Utterly horrible news.
Re: SL bombings
Hope you're safe but SL has a terrible history of this sort of shit.

Re: SL bombings
The other sister just heard back from her, and apparently she's just heard about it, so it sounds like she was at least not at the three targeted hotels.Ghost-Of-Nepia wrote:Although, looking at her itinerary, hopefully she was already on the way to her meeting point for her tour in Negombo...Ghost-Of-Nepia wrote:My sister arrived in Sri Lanka last night.

Seriously though, I'm glad your sister is safe. Watching this on the news now. I'm still no closer to understanding how people can commit such horror.

Re: SL bombings
Just had four fabulous weeks in Sri Lanka revisiting my childhood and catching up with a lot of old family friends. Beautiful country and lovely, gentle people who have come out of a terrible period. They will be petrified that it is going to start again.

Re: SL bombings
She had considered checking out a church in Negombo this morning, but went with a few of her tour group members to the beach instead. Sounds like that church was one of the three bombed. Never has the beach looked so enticing in hindsight!Kiwias wrote:Here's hoping she is safe.Ghost-Of-Nepia wrote:Although, looking at her itinerary, hopefully she was already on the way to her meeting point for her tour in Negombo...Ghost-Of-Nepia wrote:My sister arrived in Sri Lanka last night.

How can someone ever get out onto their head that this is in any way a good thing to do? How can you have so much hatred? f**king religions are shit-the perfect vehicle for dehumanizing other groups and allowing this sort of mass murder.Anonymous. wrote:At least 200 dead and at least 500 injured apparently.Working Class Rugger wrote:Two more explosions have been reported. f**king terrible.

Re: SL bombings
I'm guessing they had a double motive. Bomb churches and attack tourists (Sril Lanka being a popular tourist destination). Horrible horrible plums.
Edit - there goes Sri Lanka's tourism industry

Re: SL bombings
Yep, she's just hanging at their hotel - the tour takes them away from Colombo/Negombo, so provided it's still going ahead, I think she's risking it.Working Class Rugger wrote:So you're in contact with your sister? Word from the Sri Lankans 'in the know' is that the JVP (filthy commies) are getting a lot of fingers pointed at them already. Internal politics seems to be the first thing they're thinking of.

There was warnings over the last two weeks of possible Islamic attacks. You’re aware of that right ?
Re: SL bombings
One of the more accessible people who know about the security issues in Sri Lanka is Amarnath Amarasingam https://twitter.com/AmarAmarasingam, who is probably going to be one of the more reasoned voices on this as things unfold.

Damn , I was vaguely looking at a trip to Sri Lanka next year.
Hope this is not a prelude to more problems.

Re: SL bombings
So the Sri Lankan PM has said they had no advance warning or idea that the attacks were going to occur.
NTJ may be the local group with the most ability/motive/organization to pull off something of this size, but the local security forces have generally been keeping pretty close eyes on them, and you'd think even increased activity would have been noted if they were responsible.
