Dean Ryan to NG Dragons

This is going to end badly
Dragons are set to appoint Dean Ryan, the former Worcester director of rugby, as their new head coach.

The 52-year-old will take over at Rodney Parade in place of Bernard Jackman, who left in December 2018.

Ceri Jones has coached the Welsh Pro 14 region in an interim role since the departure of the former Ireland hooker.

Ryan has been the Rugby Football Union's head of international player development since July 2016, after three years at the Worcester helm.

The former England number eight is no stranger to Rodney Parade, as he took on the role of rugby consultant for Dragons in December 2012.

Ryan has also coached Bristol and Gloucester, and was Scotland assistant coach from 2012-13.

Dragons finished second bottom of Pro14 Conference B last season, with five wins from 21 games, despite a recruitment drive last summer that included the arrival of Wales internationals Ross Moriarty, Richard Hibbard and Aaron Jarvis.

However, Dragons did finish on a high by beating Welsh rivals Scarlets 34-32 in the Judgement Day regular season finale at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

It has been a period of upheaval for the Gwent outfit, with Dragons managing director Mike Davies also leaving his role in April after a year in the job.

Didn't he just fudge up things within the RFU development pathway... and now he's off? With the changes made, one would have thought he was in it for a few more years?

Blessing for England, I guess... good luck NGD? :?

I think he was meant to be an axe man. That's been done.

This is a pretty good example of 'it couldn't get any worse' appointing.

Exactly my thoughts. Just went nuclear on the coaches and is now off.

The positives here is that he can't make the Dragons any worse.

Who will take over his position at the RFU. Mallinder and Bates would be in pole position I guess?

What would possess any team to appoint him to do anything that doesn't involve a mop and bucket?

How does he do it? Steals a living everywhere he goes.

Probably, unless they Mallinder just wants head coach jobs. Who did they replace the youth coaches Ryan fired with?

I think it's a good signing as he's a good coach.

Good for the Dragons !

It's always amazing how reliably shit the PR 'take' is on any given coach.

Speak to anyone who's actually been coached by Ryan - as opposed to dribbling about him on a forum - and they'll tell you he's excellent.

Isn't he another in a long line of "good coaches not cut out for the top job".

Or perhaps he's someone who needs to fail first, before he can learn the lessons to succeed ?

In a lot of leadership roles in life; there's a trap that people fall into, that they try to do everything themselves, & when they fail; they get labelled as failures; even though, they can still learn from that failure. Even in team sports; the real performers, are first & foremost, Individual athletes, & that carries into their coaching careers.

The key to real leadership, is that management of people, where the leader delegates the bits they have to; & they just write the music, even if they don't play the tunes themselves.

One of the issues with English rugby is that failed coaches with good contacts or the talk a good game often get RFU positions then shoved into top jobs when they are not prepared for them. There doesn't seem many who are happy to do their time in the Championship or nationals and work under more successful coaches as they climb the ladder. It's what basically all kiwi coaches have done and they are widely the best group of coaches out there and it isn't close.

Calling him a conman is a disgrace. I don’t think he has got the results in all of the job he has undertaken.

Can some one go round and console DAC.

FFS, if the word spoofer was meant for anyone it is Ryan.

His first few years at Gloucester were a huge success. He just didn't get over the final hurdle in the league. He's supposed to be a brilliant mind in rugby circles but I've said before rugby circles seem to think chat = success in far to many cases.

It was them or the Queen herself. But Philip said something racist and the Dragons had to disavow.

I see some of the reason for it, the Telegraph says:

"The RFU board will also discuss plans to axe over £2.5 million from the professional game board, with expected cuts to the age-group budget thought to have been one of the factors behind Dean Ryan’s decision to resign as head of international player development to become director of rugby at Pro 14 side Dragons on Tuesday."

Can they make many more cuts?
The RFU bought Ryan in to restructure the coaching and support structures at U20 and below. Which he did in a very hard-hearted manner

Someone like Simon Sinek would now (rightly) point out that the best way to handle this would be collectively. The governing body have let down the community game by mismanaging funds but the Pro side of the business shoulders none of the burden. Instead further cuts are required & more jobs will go.

FWIW it's good riddance I think to DR. Everything I've heard about how he handled himself whilst at the RFU is toxic.
