How is the beer situation holding up?

Foreigners are expected to drink about four times as much as Japanese spectators, according to the organizing committee. That has brewers, distributors, and bars in Japan taking steps to avert a shortage, as the six-week competition gets under way on Sept. 20 for the first time in Asia.

“Japanese drinkers usually slow down after two to three pints, but the foreign fans, they can drink for three hours at the same pace, sometimes even up to four or five hours,” says Tsuyoshi Ohta, president of pub chain Hub Co. Ohta, who anticipates a 40% to 50% jump in monthly sales, plans to stock as much as seven times the usual supply of Kirin Ichiban Shibori lager and Heineken at some of Hub’s more than 100 locations. “There won’t be another chance like this in my lifetime.”

The shares of Hub jumped as much as 8.3% on Wednesday, the most since January, on heavy volume.

Dunno why SA don't just get the ball to Kolbe every chance they get, only time he got it was when AB,s kicked it and he nearly scored each time

The most impressive team thus far is the Iere. Impressive win over Scotland.

All Blacks have a free ride to the final. England and Scotland easy beats.

The time difference sucks. Its late afternoon here and the rugby for the day is already over. Am I supposed to just twiddle my thumbs until tomorrow morning?

It worked well yesterday though, because I had a lot of shite to do and so was busy after the last match until bed time.

Time difference is good. Leave enough time for mowing lawn or keep the fire going and making a potjie.

Shame Uruguay will have a rather short recovery tiem until teh Georgia match... a win there could see tham nailing an automatic qualification for 2023, which would be a massive boost for their national rugby program.

Certainly they benefited from Fiji's underperformance today due to rotations (and some complacency and some horriffic goal kicking...) but the schedules for the minnows are dire sometimes.

Next potential upsets?
Samoa or Japan over Ireland in Pool A?
I don't see any upsets happening in Pool B unless the Boks pull another "Japan"
England or France tripping up against someone in Pool C?
Fiji somehow playing a blinder against a Wales or Aus in D?

I am chuffed for Uruguay, despite my liking of Fijian rugby.

The whole debate about the demanding RWC schedule is summarised by Uruguay situation: on one side, it gave them the opportunity of the upset against Fiji who rotated players, on the other, they will not be at full strength against Georgia.

The routes to the RWC quarter-finals - or the plane home
07 October 2019 07:52
Tokyo - Heading into the last round of pool games at the Rugby World Cup, only two teams have already booked their quarter-final places: England and France.

Some pools are all over bar the shouting, in others there's still all to play for. AFP looks at the various scenarios as teams strive for that last-eight spot.

Pool A

With Ireland, Scotland and Japan all battling for two places, this is the most competitive pool.

If Japan beat Scotland on Sunday, they will qualify for their first ever World Cup quarter-final, topping the pool and probably giving themselves another crack at the Springboks -- a repeat of the "Miracle of Brighton" game in 2015.

If Ireland beat Samoa on Saturday with a bonus point for four tries, they have definitely qualified.

Scotland need a bonus-point win over Russia on Wednesday, and they must then beat Japan while preventing the Brave Blossoms from getting a defensive bonus point for losing by seven points or fewer.

There is a scenario in which all three teams finish on 15 points: Ireland beat Samoa without a bonus point, Scotland beat Russia with a bonus point and then score four tries in a narrow win over Japan -- meaning both teams get a bonus point.

In a two-way scenario, it is the team that won the match between them that proceeds. But this would be a three-way scenario where every team has won one and lost one. In this case, the two teams with the best points difference would qualify.

Currently Japan and Ireland have a much better points difference, but Scotland play bottom-placed Russia next and are likely to improve their tally.

Pool B

Pool B is pretty well decided, with superpowers New Zealand and South Africa virtually assured of taking first and second place respectively, barring miracles from Italy in their last match against the All Blacks.

A victory or draw by New Zealand against Italy puts the defending champions through as pool winners.

South Africa can all but guarantee a quarter-final berth with a bonus-point win against minnows Canada on Tuesday.

There is one extremely unlikely scenario in which all teams can end up with 15 points (South Africa get that bonus-point win against Canada, then Italy run in four tries in a narrow victory against the All Blacks).

Again, it would come down to points difference and New Zealand and South Africa are currently 115 and 70 points ahead of Italy respectively.

Pool C

Much more clear-cut. England and France have qualified, and all that remains to be decided is who wins the group. That will be fought out when they meet in Yokohama on Saturday.

The winner will play the runner-up of Pool D -- almost certain to be Australia. But the runner-up in the pool may not be too despondent as they will go into the other half of the knock-out draw from the All Blacks, meaning they cannot meet the defending champions until the final.

Pool D

Australia can qualify if they avoid defeat against Georgia on Friday. If Wales beat Fiji on Wednesday, they will also book their last-eight ticket and will need to win against underdogs Uruguay on Sunday to top the pool.

Mathematically, Fiji can still qualify but they have to beat Wales comfortably with a bonus point and hope the Welsh lose to Uruguay.

Possible quarter-final line-ups:

Saturday 19 October:

Winner Pool C (England/France) vs Runner-up Pool D (Australia/Wales)

Winner Pool B (New Zealand/South Africa) vs Runner-up Pool A (Japan/Ireland/Scotland)

Sunday 20 October:

Winner Pool D (Australia/Wales) vs Runner-up Pool C (England/France)

Winner Pool A (Japan/Ireland/Scotland) vs Runner-up Pool B (New Zealand/South Africa)

Had Argentina beaten France, with the points doubled for WC matches, it would've worked as well.

Double points for RWC tends to ensure teams end the tournament in the same ranking spot as their RCW finish...

Just realised that you can win every game in a pool and still not finish top which would be outrageous.

Team 1: 4W, 0BPs = 16pts
Team 2: 3W+1L, 4TBP, 1LBP = 12 + 4 + 1 = 17pts

In the 6N this could also happen with 5 games being played, so you are given an extra 3 pts.

However unlikely, it's a bit dumb from World Rugby.

What a total and utter waste of space this report is.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/49924959

Rugby World Cup: The permutations for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland

And then says ... So what are the permutations in each pool? BBC Sport takes a closer look.

South Africa v Canada (8 October): South Africa can confirm their progression with a bonus-point victory over Canada on Tuesday.

New Zealand v Italy (12 October): New Zealand are not yet mathematically through to the knockout stages, despite topping the group.

Unless Canada shock the Springboks, Italy would have to beat the All Blacks in their final game to progress, and even that may not be enough if Steve Hansen's men claimed bonus points.

The narrative more than somewhat implies each team is equal in ability. Why not just say the others have even less chance at this point in the pool stage. Someone new to rugby would not realise where we are at.

Fcuking annoying.
