They lived in Mullingar for a couple of years.
Beauden was a very good Gaelic Footballer by all accounts.

Aaron Smith was by far our key player - easily MoTM.

Meath/Cavan border but maybe some Irish connection as they were there with their father on a farm swap plus their Irish look and name?

Terrible call from Owens that’s Stains an otherwise good game
He tackled the player without his arms. Regardless if he intended to or not.

I mean it's done, but how can he be offside?
I just went back to look at the replays of that... he wasn't offside at all.
Owens immediately stated that Todd came in from an offside position..... which he clearly didn't as he was behind the line.
Then Owens reiterated and said he came in from an offside position to deliberately block the posts.
You can see Todd went for a shoulder block on Stander and got shunted back into the posts by Stander and his support players.... he didn't try to dive in front of the posts at all.
Owens got that whole thing wrong, but he clearly wanted to give Ireland something so what can you do?
Pretty f**king gutless by Owens considering Ire should have been carded multiple times in the first half.

The whole pack did a job, but I felt Read led from the front and looked like the player of a few years ago... Ardie was good too... even Owen Franks performed well according to some...

Smith couldn't help getting pulled ... we always do that. Read put in a good night at the coal face but Smith was the key to our game. So wins my vote.

Yep, tough call, pretty much all the ABs had decent games.

The best game by Smith for years.

Read was excellent taking the ball up and some great hits. -got us a lot of early momentum, and continued momentum

I thought the key to our game was our defence, reminded me of the 2015 final where we just smashed the hell out of the aussies and totally put them off their game from very early on

There’s daylight between smith and tjp, smith was very good tonight

Congrats NZ. Was at work so stuck listening on radio, seems we didn't give you much of a game.

All our media chat leading up was about big d and putting the squeeze on - no one had a notion it might be the other way round.

Main ones that stick out....
Stockdale's deliberate knock down, Owens said he was lucky not to get carded at the time.
Throughout the tourny that would have been a card, but Owens didn't want to pull it out.
There were numerous other neck tackles from Ireland, cumulatively they still didn't cop a warning from Owens.
POM got pinged for one shoulder charge but he should have been carded for the deliberate dive through to stop an AB try when they were 5 metres out... not to mention it was his second shoulder charge when he hit Whitelock.

In a game like that MOTM is meaningless. There were so many standout performances it seems wrong to pick out one player. I loved what both wingers did though. The coverage I watched had Bryan Habana as one of the team and he suggested our wingers were a potential vulnerability due to their inexperience but they sure put that theory to bed.
The penalty try and yellow for Todd was an appalling call. What if that was in a tied game to decide a RWC final?

It was the correct call. Pt a bit much yes, but nothing wrong with the penalty for no arms tackle and flopping at the base of the post.

You can't just flop off your feet and I fluence the game like that. It however was NOT offside.

How good was SBW? Drags multiple defenders in and always manages to get his arm free and put support players into space, such a quality player to bring on in the last 20-30 minutes of a game.

Yes you can, the Irish did it with impunity at 80% of the rucks with no sanction.

There, that should move the thread along another 10 pages or so.

Todd PT was very harsh I think ..... but then again how NZ weren’t pinged for constantly sealing off rucks all game is beyond me. They may need to be more careful on that issue with a different ref against England

Neither issue being called differently would have made any sort of dent in NZ’s dominance though .... so hardly worth debating
