Todd was onside and done nothing wrong, then after wrongfully penalising Nigel calls for the tmo to have a look at it but just gives a yellow and never talks with the tmo.
Was a complete circus

TMO immediately agreed with Nigel.

Yeah I don't get it myself. Nige clearly said offside, he even said it twice. I can only assume he's gotten his feathers ruffled and confused himself, he might have truely believed Todd was offside but used TMO to check anyway and he clearly wasn't. He then waffled to the TMO about offside too. What the fudge was he actually on about?

I'm not sure if you can just drop in front of the post to stop a ball placed against it, I don't see how that's any different to flopping under a player over the line to hold a try up.
I don't know if I've ever seen that scenario before.

Nige just bottled it. He originally gave the penalty try and yellow for the player stopping the try by being “clearly offside”. He then said the TMO agrees then I guess he finally actually saw the footage himself as they were running back and realised he’d f**ked up and said “erm ah yep no arms tackle too!”

It was a meaningless call in the greater scheme of things but just a bit concerning to see a ref like Owens losing the plot over a call like that. He seemed to want to be a bit of a star himself at times during that match and make some clever calls (like the penalty reversal).

Was quite a weird thing. Todd kinda flopped in front of the post to stop him grounding it. Not sure if that is legal or not.

He had a funny old day. When he was looking at the BB try from Reece's tackle that dislodged the ball, he was talking himself through it with the TMO. Nig was convinced that Reece's head had knocked the ball loose" so he was looking for offside from the next AB to touch it. I'm listening to him while desperately trying not to throw my beer at the TV. He carried on like this for about 15 secs, before finally the TMO got a word in edgeways to stop him and point out the Reece hadn't touched the ball! That must have been because he heard me screaming at him from my couch.

Owens had a good match overall, but I felt that when the margin blew out he tended to favour Ireland a bit. As if he was trying to manufacture a closer scoreline. That was weird. Imagine a RWC final was decided on that Matt Todd penalty try decision.

Yes SBW was hovering offside, although he wasn't part of the play and therefore refs tend to ignore those players.

Nope because he then wibbled something about a no-arrrrms tuckle.

I wonder if that decision will cost him any chance of a final

The weirdest thing was the TMO immediately agreed with Owens call about him being offside.

Part of the reason Todd tackled like he did was that he hurt his left shoulder a ruck or before and was heavily favouring it. Strange decision with the offside call though.

He should, but I suspect he got “offside” in his mind and then pinged Todd. Hopefully WR will clarify it as there will be some fans very confused by the call.

I’ll try and watch it again today but on first viewing a lot of that game was reffed really weirdly, especially after the scoreline blew out.

Just rewatched the game. I'm still gobsmacked with Owens's decision against Todd. WR need to clarify the decision asap.

Who'd be a ref?

You control a game beautifully, and then after a massive brainfart it's all anyone talks about.

That's not uncommon. They're typically timid individuals, scared of making a mistake on the big stage. That means they generally agree with the referee 9.5 times out of ten.

Which made it even weirder for him to overrule Owens earlier in the same game.

Oh do f**k off. I have already said Owens refereed well overall. But the Todd YC was surreal.

I thought this too. But having awarded the PT so quickly, denying Wales the chance to play advantage, I think he was then looking to make the call correct, rather than make the correct call.

There was an undoubted penalty for SBW offside, but it wasn't that which prevented the try. So no PT.

I need correcting by a ref but I don’t see anything that stops you using any body part to prevent a try being grounded and the base of the post is in goal.

I’m not convinced about the quality of your observational skills... ;)

My point here isn’t about criticism of Refs, it’s the tendency of fans to run with faulty interpretations. WR clarification would be helpful if they help fans understand actual laws, like offside and in goal.

No one is whining about it. They're just trying to understand a call in an unusual situation that most haven't seen before.

Only a precious twat would think anyone was seriously having a whinge about the ref.
