Were it not for that early loss of the English props we could have struggled. Although that didn't guarantee that Beast and Malherbe would not have broken him anyway.

Then we lost 2 forwards and I kakked myself.

Then it became obvious that there was very little difference between our starters and bench.

Just a few things about this:

I wanted England to win, which shocked me, because the one thing I have always hated is the poms winning, but they won me over with their amazing performances of the previous 2 weeks, and the fact that the arrogance of England teams post-1988 seemed to be gone.

For those reasons I feel sorry for the horde of England fans who caught planes to Yokohama to turn up and watch a team that didn't turn up. It was a huge blow for England when they lost Sinckler to be replaced by someone who produced a 50% drop in scrummaging ability. That wouldn't have made the difference, though, as the whole England team had transitioned from one that mastered a game plan and executed it perfectly to one that showed handling and passing skills that would have embarrassed a junior schoolboys team. At one point the whole squad seemed programmed to automatically drop the ball on contact. The only 2 who looked able to keep them in it were Underhill and B Vunipola, and to a lesser extent, Itoje, but they were way outnumbered by their colleagues, of whom Curry played more like a Cream Puff.

I also felt for Eddie Jones, who had done such a magnificent job of preparing his squad, but made a terrible tactical blunder during the week which made me fear the worst, when he said, "We must go out there and show no fear" - that's putting fear in the space, and as it eventuated England played very like a team trying to overcome fear (and failing). By contrast, South Africa spoke only of the possibilities of victory, such as unifying the country, and played like they had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Imo a lot of the coaching (especially the inspirational part) is in the language, and before previous games E J had drawn on the mythology of his spiritual homeland and analogies with the courage and rigour of the Samurai, which fired up the players.

Great credit to the Springboks for being totally up for the game; at least one team played worth of the occasion, and hopefully the victory will be a unifying force for the nation, a possibility Kolisi's beautiful acceptance speech pointed to. The saddest thing about England's performance was that they let down the world rugby community, which had been primed for a great game and didn't get it.

i do not think that Sinkler is a much better scrummager than Coles; Sinkler was preferred for his off-loading and running

At this stage in his career, Cole is the better technician but Sinks is far more physically powerful.

What I know about front row play you could put on a postage stamp , but weren’t the problems more on the other side of the scrum ? The pens seemed to stop after mako got swopped for Marler

Oh man, what a feeling! Only felt safe from about the 70 minute mark. I feel for the english team as they did not perform to their abilities, but I'm absolutely stoked for our boys. Great to see the scenes after the game and Harry in the Boks changing room. Seems under Rassie the team spirit is top notch and also the respect for opposition.

I dislike the Mail, but they do have some genuinely good rugby writers and a real insight to the game and are well informed. It's like Wales Online, a silly rag but their Rugby writers (as opposed to their headline writers who do the clickbait stuff) know their stuff and have the inside scoop more often then not.

I thought his take on PSDT's role in the team was quite good. Basically free roam and not part of the overall defense structure, but there to disrupt the attack. And how he seemed to line up opposite Ford for a lot of the time, following him around and lining him up.

Yep - I'm glad that came out in the analysis. I quested a stat posted on here that claimed that PSdT doesn't make a lot of "dominant tackles" and the prevailing theory some posted was that he just stands as a pillar around the rucks. I'm glad the video exposed that he does so much more than that...and that the statistics provided were likely BS.

PSdT and Faf are the 2 linchpins that our defense is built around, with Am or Kriel at 13 being responsible for the critical defensive reads when the ball does manage to get out wide.

If you watched his analysis of the Australia vs Georgia match you'll understand why that comment was justified.

Unless Cheicka was bluffing when he said he hadn't done any homework on his opponents and then fried to take them on up front anyway.
