England can't muster any class after the match

Post by chicharino »

Disgraceful behavior during the medal award and the rest of the plums who ripped of their medal or Itoje for not letting them put it on his neck. Losing sucks but doing it with class is a step too far for those plums.

I have no problem with them taking the off their necks straightaway but I think they should allow the medals to be placed on their necks.

But not something anybody is going to lose any sleep over

I remember John Howard ( Australia PM) off his head (drunk) strangling players ( England) with the medal, 2003.

All good.

Sinkler played 2 mins through no fault of his own.

The guy was rightfully disappointed, nothing more than that.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a plum.

I'm not a fan of (some of) their behavior. Taking the medal off IMMEDIATELY after you received it was classless and poor.
But definitely seemed only a few and not indicative of the whole team, lots of them looked gracious in defeat.

My team would be honored to come in second in anything. Pretty sure they would also recognize coming in second at the world cup is rightly something to be proud of

I didnt think it was a good look at all.

I can understand the disappointment and emotions but it would be much much more classy to be stoic instead of childish.

I noticed one of the English flankers kept his on the whole time and it stood out as a class act among babies, at least to me.

The emotion must be immense. I'm not judging. Just saying the more stoic and classy thing would be to accept it.

England showed an obvious disdain for the medal and the ceremony that was commemorating their 2 ND place effort.

Taking it off afterwards I can accept as humility. But the players such as Itoje who refused to accept it around their neck in the first place were Mike Brown levels of plums.

Some disappointing behaviour but hardly ununderstable. Not letting someone put a medal on you when they're trying to recognise your achievement is just a bit rude nothing more, and a bad example for the children, will nobody think of them?

Maybe they should rethink the medal situation, this isn't the olympics and having a team go up and have medals hung on them after losing is obviously a strange thing to do. Give them a plaque or small trophies of recognition that they can carry off with them so the time can be taken to congratulate them for making the final.

These players know either way that cameras are on them all the time, they need to recognise the importance of being good role models too.

Silly thread though, but given the players singled out maybe it's telling that the wohoooo players are the same ones who seem to be bad losers, food for thought.

Refusing a medal is crass and poor sportsmanlike. As pointed out, an Olympic athlete would be rightfully called a douche for doing such a thing.

Medals in knockout comps arent worth shit and in no way are not comparable to medalling in Olympic events.

They are literally no different than Olympic medals. You either are best, second best or third best and get the relevant medal. Not rocket science

I've deleted Sinklers name from the title. Will give the benefit of the doubt that his protruding lower lip pout along with the shuffling feet and downward gazing along with the rapid removal of the medal like it had burnt him was all head knock induced.

I don't agree, Olympic medals have always meant something and traditionally are an individual achievement. Coming 2nd in the final of the 100m final is not comparable to coming second in a world cup event, it's about a cup not medals. The medals themselves in this case are an individual memento, not the prize.

But while they do exist, one should accept the gesture with pride and example.

I don’t blame them, emotions running high, add the disappointment, exhausted bodies having just given their all. They’ll calm down and see this for what it was, they were worthy finalists, timing their best rugby for this competition and exorcising all the ghosts that manifested in 2015. Well done England.

Has there always been loser’s medals for RWC’s?

Either way, why do they even have them? People complain about kids having too many meaningless medals and yet many expect these professionals to stand there when incredibly disappointed and be handed a losers’ medal in front of everyone?

I’ve been on both sides as player and coach for school and club comps. When on the losing end, we did what we were ‘supposed to’, but why? It’s pointless gesture in team sport, I reckon. When we lost a premier final, we wanted to just leave but also wanted to let our friends on the other team have their moment to themselves. When we won it, we didn’t even notice them as we were so excited for each other. The losing team should be allowed to just go and console themselves.

I can only imagine it feels 10 times worse for pros who live for the sport to be standing in front of 30 times the people and in front of 300 times more on telly.
