Official Predict the Lions Starting XXIII in 2021 thread

Post by Jeff the Bear »

Now that this World Cup nonsense is over, it's time to pick your lines starting 23 for the first Lions test in 2021. We'll revisit this thread in the week leading up to the first test to see who really knows their onions!

15. Liam Williams
14. Josh Adams
13. Manu Tuilagi
12. Jon Davies
11. Jacob Stockdale
10. Owen Farrell
9. Tomos Williams

8. Billy Vunipola

No one in the Isles has a decent inside centre...so I'm left shoe-horning in Davies and Tuilagi. Tuilagi might seem the more obvious IC, but he has even worse hands and distribution than Davies, so Davies gets IC.

Twatland again? Hasn't he done enough damage? Winning record but just a dreadful period for the lions.

Honestly, it doesn't really matter if he has crap hands. These days, most structures have 12s only doing pop passes as part of a wedge formation

How can winning a series in Oz and drawing with NZ be counted as a 'dreadful period'?!

Any club or province would have beaten that Aus side, they were shite and he picked all his mates.

I'm not talking about the results, I'm talking about the style of rugby and not picking any Scots.

Sending Wales on a tour next door and calling up also-rans is diabolical.

The Lions should not be coached by the same guy 4 tours on the trot.

Can someone post the equivalent results from after previous WCs

I recall vividly there were posters after 2011 that expected the Lions back three to be North, Ashton and Foden

Similarly after 2015 most Lions sides had a truckload of Scottish players starting

Is this a joke?

Jonathan Davies and Wyn Jones will be in the nursing home by 2021.

That's the same Dan Leavy who hasn't played in a year?

And Rhys Carre over Mako?

Yes, it’s quite possible the 21 year old Rhys Carre may be picked ahead of the 28 year old Mako Vunipola in 2 years time. Plus, erm, Mako didn’t have a great game last time out against SA..........

I’m struggling to see AWJ touring in 2 years though Jeff.

it looks for all the world like that us what he's targetting (i.e. he'll hang up his boots at thend of that season).

Granted, it's a relative long shot, but if AWJ is still playing at that stage, is fit, and hasn't fully succumb to age...I'd be amazed if Gatland doesn't take him. Whether he makes the team from there will be the question.

Lions will need a Simon Shaw type lock to just bulldoze his way into rucks and mauls.

Doesn't matter, pick anyone
Result will be 2-1 or 3-0
Either way it will be 2-0 after two tests

Yes, hopefully the Boks maintain their form post-Rassie! If that's the case, will be 2-0 after the first two tests and then a younger Boks team will be fielded for the 3rd test which means it could go either way but the Boks would smash the lions if they can continue to play as they have in 2019.

I have zero interest in the lions (other than hoping for no injuries and wanting a watchable test series) but used to live in SA so will be watching as a neutral/ maybe favouring the Boks.

I reckon Curry could play 7 if another 6 sticks their hand up over the next two years, or even an 8 like Faletau or Stander who can play 6 or 8.

Hogg has not hit any real top form for the last 12 months. Would be good to see him back to his destructive best but he'll need a good 6 nations to shows he's still the man.

Other Scots worth a mention -
Russell
Watson

Possible squad bolters -
Ritchie
Hutchinson
Graham

It's gonna be another bleak Lions tour for us Scots, even more so with Warren back in the hot seat.

Still though, there's always the guaranteed willy waving on Lions threads to keep us entertained.

It's tough to pick any Scots after that RWC

Like last time, still can't perform away from home(not convinced they can at home)

Carre, George, sinckler, itoje, AWJ, Curry, Wainwright, Faletau, Tomos, Anscombe, Adams, Farrell, tuilagi, May, Williams
Reps. Token Irish

If Russell goes he'll go as dirt-tracker 10, he's far too flaky to be in contention for a test slot.
