The one in Northampton, where I used to work, does not count!

I have a bit of a nerdy fascination with lighthouses which manifests in one way in my attempt to visit every one on the island of Ireland. Typically, I simply append each visit to a nice hike.

Where I'm from is close to the Cape Lookout lighthouse. (close as the crow flies)

Done some vacationing up in Michigan this year, and there's more than 100 lighthouses around Lake Michigan.

Friend of mine did the refurb on the Kish earlier this year and took me out over the summer to take a look.....been on a few lighthouses but that was my first time there. Scandinavian engineering at its cleverest.

What's the name of the book Globus, my missus might be interested in that, she likes a lighthouse. Walked past Happisburgh lighthouse just this past weekend.

I grew up surfing below the Slangkop Lighthouse in Kommetjie outside Cape Town. It's a cast iron lighthouse which is apparently quite rare these days.

Now you've really hit the nail on the head. I used to cycle to Happisburgh Lighthouse from Eccles-On-Sea and have a cup of tea and a rich biscuit with the lighthouse keeper. I then went up and helped him clean the lamps.

I have an original watercolour of said, wonderful, edifice on my landing, painted by Simon Dolby.




What brought you to Norfolk. Are you anywhere near Oundle? If so, do come and visit.

Around Llanelli there are two:

Burry Port Lighthouse - 20ft as just a harbour light - just a couple of miles down from Llanelli
Whiteford Point Lighthouse - 44ft - opposite on the Gower, pronounced Whitford


From where I live in Florida there are two too:

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse - 146ft - was near it at a turtle 'hospital' last weekend, and planned to visit, but it was having maintenance done for a couple of weeks so closed
Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse - 136ft - made out of iron

There are 4/5 about 1-2 hours further north in St Augustine and Cape Canaveral. And twice as many down in the Keys, about 3-4 hours away. Probably another 5-10 around Florida on the gulf.

This is my favourite lighthouse - it's right next to a pub.

This one is on a lake.

This is great chaps. I started with England and Wales and now we are going global! Lots of interesting research to do.
GPS has rendered them not needed anymore but my nav stuff still has them popping up.

I'll never forget the sight of St Catherine's after picking a way through the shipping lanes in the Channel at night.

There's a pub called The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott where I've got seriously in my cups.

We had one of our holiday homes near there. Three fishermen's cottages knocked into one.

There's usually a pub near a lighthouse. Thank the Lord.

Yes, and they had Adnams Old Ale on draft there and in the Nelly - perfect for sitting by the fire on a chilly evening.

Got in there before me. Yep, that must be the one.

Just down the road is the Adnams brewery. Plenty more stories (not lies, thanks) about that place.

But it's in Suffolk. That knocks a lot off its glitter.

The "Signal Station" at Mizen Head is not a lighthouse, as such, but is quite a lovely walk and a trip over the gorge.

Fastnet is not far away. Been around that but avoided it once when we fled to Kinsale.

Friends of mine live in Southwold and Walberswick. Love visiting in off-season when it is quieter. The Adnams is just as good but you get served quicker!

Mumbles Lighthouse. I have walked out and around it a few times at low tide. As a boy was fascinated by the gun emplacements facing out over the bay.https://www.trinityhouse.co.uk/lighthou ... lighthouse

Whiteford Lighthouse, another that I have walked around at low tide with my kids, while camping at Llanmadoc. This one though is a cast iron construction.

Interesting fact on Wikipedia
The first known cast-iron British lighthouse was at Swansea Harbour and was built in 1803. The architect was Jernegan, and the plates were cast at the Neath Abbey Ironworks.

Cheers Globus, I'll have a look at that. My missus is originally from Lessingham, which is just down the road from Eccles. North Norfolk is a lovely place.

Cape Reinga - I went there in NYE 1999 expecting to see a great view of the waters meeting, but it was foggy as shit and I couldn't see a thing.



Cape Palliser - My wife and I went there (almost bumped into a seal) and climbed the steps whereupon she really needed to pee, so I went round the other side to give her some privacy. But she'd had a Berocca and the vitamin B turned her pee bright neon yellow which must have been a nice surprise for the family that came up after us.

Split Rock lighthouse. Just north of Duluth on the north shore of Lake Superior.

I got stuck overnight (well almost with tides) when I was 14 on st Mary's lighthouse near Whitley bay...

We got into serious amounts of trouble when the causeway cleared enough for us to get back at about 3am.
