What has happened in Australia is beer has become very expensive whilst other alcohols especially spirits has become relatively cheap. Also the tax on alcohol based on % has meant some local beers have gone below 5% which puts off many drinkers. Most 5+% beers are imported but come in 330ml bottles instead of 375ml. All in all you get more bang for your bucks with spirits. Less carbs too.

I was back in Oz a couple years ago after more than 10 years away, and far and away the most disappointing part of the whole trip was the poor, flavorless character and outrageous pricing of the beer.

The outrageous beer tax in Australia confuses me. People don't drink less - they just move on to cheap wine and spirits.

The country is littered with small breweries and distillery’s with attached cellar doors plus many pubs brew their own. Even ten years ago there was heaps of choice .... Irish pubs are dominated by big industry brands which generally non flavoured lagers and it’s the same here or was, usually 4-5 beer types on tap at any city pub these days

Big change in kiwi culture with drink driving laws, becoming a wine producing nation.......and a preference for craft beers. Fill a flagon has practically disappeared, though weekly supermarket trolleys show a controlled home drinking preference. Yup overall drinking less beer, and probably more wine.....

Yeah we can squarely lay the blame on Nols and his fake tan wearing Instagram mates.

I’ve heard Americans comment that they are surprised when over here that most people drink beer and not spirits. They assume that because we are known as drinkers that we’d be hitting the whiskey more.

I tried everything I could. Went deep down menus and took in every recommendation I could get. They were all just so bland. I found much better selection, flavour and (obviously) value in the early 00’s.

Irish pubs are very same-y and it’s always been my biggest criticism, but at least the Guinness is good as a fall-back.

You have to really look hard for a bar in California shit enough to not have something like a decent IPA on tap or at least in bottles.

Americans don’t drink beer in nearly the volume the Irish do, though. Every time I go home and meet the lads in the pub, I end up in absolute tatters the first night. I think part of it is that the pints are just bigger.

Mid table mediocrity - it’s where we belong. Interesting that the UK isn’t in the top 20. If you believe that Muslims don’t drink that is.

There's a bit of that to it, but lets face it, the main part of it is that the lads are just Irish.

Personally, it used to be I'd drink beer because it's relatively cheap. But since it's priced the same spirits and close to top shelf I've since just pick and choose on the day.
Also a lot of beers are below 5%. I wouldn't waste my time on it tbh. I'd drink Guinness if it's there or spirits. I'd even drink wine rather than low strength beer. Maybe because I'm late 30s and it takes more to get me drunk.

It's interesting to note when Straya's precipitious decline in standing began: viz. the years immediately following 1988.

1988 was Australia's bicentenary year and there was much in the way of piss-soaked celebration. It was also the year Brisbane hosted World Expo, plus the Australian beer war was in full swing, with Bernie Power launching a new beer brand in Brissie and Alan Bond's Swan Premium Lager blimp becoming a familiar sight over state capitals.

Basically it was a year Straya spent making a drunken pest of itself. Remorse and reform kicked in sometime after New Year's Day 1989...

I guess there is no surprise that Irish beer drinking can be mapped by economics and earnings.... Joining the EEC, early 80's recession and high interest rates, tiger economy and banking collapse. It's like an economic history of the Republic in stout.

There is a huge drop off around 2000 though. That must be down to the growth in popularity of wine?

I'd be interested to see the total alcohol consumption figures

Remarkable graph.

You can almost see Ireland starting to modernise around the year 2000.

Surely no coincidence that beer consumption fell off a cliff just as the old conservative Catholic ascendancy began to lose its grip.

Around the same time you flunked your leaving cert, scraping into a media studies course at DIT and destined to a career in explaining the benefits of a south facing rear garden.

It's because the wine industry lobbies for cheaper tax.
