I was planning to rant about this UK Athletics appointment but didn't get round to it, there was almost a type of Peadogate incident at the top of UK athletes.:

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/ ... -executive

Basically Zara Hype Peters husband got into some 'inappropriate relationship' at the school with an underage girl and naturally got banned from coaching minors. She was decided she should replace the old head of UK Athletics Neil Black, who left because he spent years backing Salazar and sending athletes to his doped up regime. Only they were gonna replace him with a women who not only knew her husband was banned for taking advantage of a vulnerable girl, but knew he carried on coaching (as vice chair) where kids were training for years still. Huge safeguarding issues.

Fortunately UK Sport read them the riot act and put their foot down and UKA who were backing her despite the news of her husband, backed down and fired her before she started.

In setting a National Junior and Under-23 record, the 18-year-old Moyne Community School student in Longford also became the second fastest Under-20 performer in the Indoor 800 metres in European Athletics history and the quickest on the continent’s record books in over 20 years.

His time also represented the fastest junior indoor 800 metres in the world in five years and the sixth quickest by an Under-20 athlete in the world in the history of the sport.

My current favourite athlete is Wayde van Niekirk.

Before she retired in 2018, I was a big fan of Christine Ohuruogu.

Thank you

You're feeling good about the parents race at your child's sports day, only Shelley-Ann Frazer-Price is there for her kid and treats it like an Olympic final:

Not yet. The last I heard we was in some weird fight with anotehr athlete which in USA rehab. Some on Letsrun.com forums claimed she was effectively blackballed after that. She hasn't posted on her IG for a few years. I always liked her.

Is this the famous South African hand timing ?

It’s strange that none of these kids ever get through to the top of senior men’s 100 metres internationally .

Not a hand timing :) They won't approve a SA record on hand timing. Many Top schools athletes go to US Universities on athletic scholarships.

Big deal - if they are running close to 10 flat at that age they should be top international athletes a few years later .

Instead they effectively disappear.

In the NCAA (US college championship) 100m final last year, there was one South African and he ran a 10.26, finishing 8th. Same guy is also the U20 SA national record holder at 10.06. Can pretty much guarantee that you don't have high school kids regularly, or ever, averaging a real sub-10.13 there.

 The Record 40.51 for the 4x100m schools Relay but bear in mind 3 of the 4 sprinters had a running start as it's a Relay.

Also worth pointing out that dividing the 4x100 into 4 equal legs doesn't work, legs 2, 3 and 4 all have a running start.

That said, the SA u20 runners from the 2021 World U20 Championships* hold the world record which could be some runners from this group.

*Neither the USA or Jamaica entered this championship due to Covid.

I’m very aware of that .

However there’s been a lot of posts in the past about these schoolboys in SA and their times which seem disproportionately quick for their age .

Where’s the progression in later years tho ?

Nothing seems to translate to international dominance.

It’s weird .

I see this more as a general thread that includes the local schools meet.

One may set too high expectations for these high schoolers f one expects international dominance to follow a 40.51 seeing SA won the World Relay Athletics champs 4x100m two years ago in 38.71.

Its really not weird that they don't go on to dominate seeing its Interschools in SA and the world, USA and Jamaican times

And Kipyegon streaked clear to win in 3 minutes 49.11 seconds, breaking the 3:50 barrier for the first time.

Faith ran an ave. of just over 61 secs. per 400m.
We as 15-16 year old schoolboys always tried to go under 60 in the first 400m when we ran the 800m but very few could maintain it for 2 Rounds let alone the near 4 Rounds that she ran.
Great Record!

Irish runner Rhasidat Adeleke won the 400m in the NCAA last weekend. Set a meet record and smashed the Irish record. Very special athlete.
Sonia O'Sullivan's daughter is also a handy middle distance runner!

zharnel hughes ran 9.83 today to break linford christies long standing 100m british record (9.87) and is the fastest time in world this year so far
Its perhaps slightly hard to identify totally with him as he was born and raised in anguilla and trains and lives in america,so he does feel the rugby equivalent of a poach!
good run though- hes shown some glimpses over the years but this is his best ever performance. hes never been very consistent.

Hughes was quite hyped up as a teenager, hence why GB were keen to get him in.
