A number of things will change before the next election whether that's in three months or three years,

The first is that SF will be seen as a potential government party and it's policies and spokes persons will come under considerable media gaze, analysis and criticism.
Secondly, SF have reaped the benefit of a general anti-establishment feeling, and keeping that additional 10% or so of their vote will be difficult when they are striving to become the establishment themselves.
Thirdly, as I noted previously, making the jump from one TD per constituency to two, is actually quite a difficult trick to pull off.
And finally, the full glare of FF and FG will be brought to bear on SF, and a goodly proportion of the lumps they normally knock out of each other will now be aimed at SF.[/quote]

yup - I don't think another general election automatically means a lot more seats for SF

It's all emotion, tweets and meme's. SF have the machine to control that so forget political analysis.

What do you think is best for the country long term?
I was attempting to have a debate with some otherwise sane people who would be anti-FF/FG and voted SF.

All I got back were memes, photoshopped pictures of Coveney leading Varadkar in a gimp suit, and the most mind blowingly inaccurate statistics: "100,000 homeless people in Dublin alone, 20,000 people on trollies, no bankers pay any tax since the bailout" etc.

They also literally do not give a toss about the past when its specific to SF, but happy to bitch about FF and FG facilitating church abuse, Tuam baby thing etc. It's not even selective amnesia, they know full well what happened, they just don't care.

You just can't win against that. Or at least, I don't see how you can win against that currently.
There is some "Vice" reporter in Dublin giving it big licks on twitter, engaging in a bit of national exceptionalism.
To all the UK pundits looking to understand the Irish election: this is what happens when a country experiences austerity and the electorate isn't stupid and racist
Only 25% voted for SF but the perception is that SF have won. Ignoring all of SF's atrocities, it's so depressing.

Higgins, Curran and Kenny in a battle for the last 2 seats in Dublin Mid West.
Gogarty has been eliminated and his votes are now being transferred.
Higgins is 1800 ahead of Curran who is only one or two hundred ahead of Kenny. Hard to say who Gogarty will transfer to. You'd think the transfers will go to Curran and Higgins rather than Kenny.

One of biggest issues I see is the amount of airtime the more presentable /less semtexy guys in sf will get now. Lads like o brion and o ‘laoire are too young to be directly linked with the troubles.

Ff won’t ever ever get a preference from me if they get into bed with Mary Lou

The belated bleating about the PIRA from the mexicans here is hilarious. Youve spent the last decade or more telling the unionists to get over it and power share and now faced with the same reality you shit the bed about things you never cared about before. The general reaction to Paul Quinn type events has been "nordies being nordies' or "scum killing scum." So suck it up and enjoy your buttermilk.

That's extremely sad :(

I could see FF TD's splitting now. Those who will sit with SF and those who wont. That would be great for Mary Lou. FF beating FG this time is a real poisoned chalice
How many do you think would be that strong in their convictions?
No more than FF were seen as FG in this election, if FF go in with SF, it'll solidify the link between the two and SF have the momentum to swallow FF. That will be the biggest question all the FF TDs have to ask themselves. Not 'do I want to go into government with SF' but 'Do I want to join SF' because going in with them starts that process. Really think they'd be mad to do it.
Does FF going into coalition with FG put the shinners into government next election?
Not if they keep doing forming coalitions... Probably advisable bringing SF in somehow. Leaving them out with the biggest mandate would play to their victimhood strength. That alone would be unbearable in the media. Actually fudge it, freeze them out and let them worry about Irish politics instead of the inevitable border poll they'll be angling for. plum

Flicking through the count tracker in various constituencies it's very obvious that a lot of transfers are going between SD and Green, and Labout and PBP. Indos largely going to other indos. FG only really picking up big numbers from running mates and a bit of SD.

I’ve always floated ff/fg. Always looked at the dail arithmetic as much as the candidate.
Swapping every few terms stopped too much power etc. I’d have zero issue if this was a labour wave as much as it’d hit the pocket. A party that killed guards in power. Makes me want to vomit

No we don’t.

We say you made an agreement and you need to stick to it.

It’s an agreement in a daycare democracy.

I see another one peddling this “Paul Quinn wasn’t reported” myth.

Long for the days when they would end up champagne socialists and Labour supporters.

My only hope is a long betracted public discussion for government allowing at least some discussion of these issues.

Some of the journos are rubbing themselves raw with this winds of change.
