Wouldn't it be great if the fuckwit under 40s could be vaccinated - then they wouldn't catch it and pass it on to the vulnerable.
Why not expose them to the virus instead as it readily available today and the under 40s are rarely impacted unless they have an existing underlying condition ? Probably cheaper and easier to distribute than the vaccine.
There will be some side-effects, but you haven't tried the hastily developed vaccines yet ...
Yeah, we could have games of rugby and invite all the under 40s to watch.
Do you know any teams which may turn up?
The All Blacks and the Wallabies ...

Singapore, October 20
Researchers in Singapore have developed a breath test to detect Covid-19 within a minute. The authorities are working on a roadmap for the third phase of easing of safety measures in the country.
A person would have to blow into a disposable mouthpiece connected to a “high-precision breath sampler”, according to the National University of Singapore researchers. The test, which detects Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in a person’s breath, achieved more than 90 per cent accuracy in a clinical trial involving 180 patients.
The exhaled breath is then collected and fed into a mass spectrometer for measurement. A machine learning software subsequently analyses the VOC profile and generates the result in less than a minute. — PTI

Define 90% accuracy?
Biggest issue would be false positives but if that means 10% of positives get through while no negatives get inconvenienced, that would still be really helpful in conjunction with other measures.

That or for high infection zones in Europe, you can immediately quarantine and contact trace the positive results and then proceed with the remaining negatives to the antibody tests just for accuracy and certainty.
1 you immediately quarantine those that pose most risk and
2 you still perform the regular check that takes time, but you reduce the overall testing which can speed up the existing process and with the reduced volume improve turnaround times overall.
Definitely has positives.

Interesting: studies conducted in the UK and the US would indicate that death rates have dropped 20% roughly.
Hypothesis are these numbers are driven by better care (Doctors now have well established routines to deal with patients, they identify better those at risk of developing a severe form of the disease), hospitals not being saturated, and masks wearing.

Well maybe in Bethesda... I go cycling on the Rock Creek trail, which is just about 6 feet wide in most places, which would be good if everyone keeps single-file to the edge and wear masks. But they don't. I would estimate only 25% of walkers wear masks, and very few runners do (and they aspirate the most). And this isn't exactly a Trump heartland. Madness, I just don't get it - what can't people understand here, that they do everywhere else in the world?

Yeah no runners wear masks here and it isn't even part of a narrative now. Certainly in the early days people were pissed off with runners breathing but that has subsided
Well I run when I am injury-free, cycle when I'm not. There is nothing I enjoy more in these Covid times than a panting, sweating, maskless runner passing just 2 feet away from me. Might as well just spit in my face. If indeed the UK actually did say runners don't have to wear masks then that would really be diagnostic of their failure. Fortunately I don't believe that particular poster.

All advice is to remove race covering when exercising for safety of oxygen supply, this goes for indoor gyms as well as outside. We also don’t have a wear mask outside rule.
You’d be better off believing my posts as they’re accurate.

And yet despite that, despite our awful health care system (according to many posters here), despite Trump being the worst Western leader on this (also according to many posters here) and despite everything else,
we have deaths per capita more than twice as low as the UK, lower than Ireland and 3-5 times lower than the major Latin nations. And all that despite having an initial outbreak around the same time as Italy. Cognitive dissonance abounds.

So you reckon he shouldn't be allowed a prestigious platform to speak in the area for which he won a Nobel Prize because he has unfashionable views in relation to a different area of science. Interesting view.
By the way he was offered the key note. That offer was later withdrawn because colleagues complained.

The infection fatality rate of COVID-19 is several-fold higher than that of seasonal influenza,2 and infection can lead to persisting illness, including in young, previously healthy people (ie, long COVID).3
The latest WHO paper state a totally different IFR. Long covid or “viral fatigue “ as it’s always been known.

Might be horrible here too in a couple of weeks. They let Fillipino ship works fly in without mandatory quarantine who then infected a local electrical engineer who then infected others.

Not quite right - they went into quarantine until they could be placed in the boat. The worker was in PPE gear but obviously wasn't careful enough.
Armageddon seemed like a clusterf### - I think they needed to limit numbers so if anyone got into that with the virus, we could be in a spot of bother alright.

Sorry, meant to say mandatory 14 day quarantine. If the ship owner/manager requires Phillipino crew on 13 October they should have arrive in the country 14 days prior and be quarantined like everyone else.
It's not good enough to say they are going straight to their boat because the boat is not a secure environment. As you point out, leaving proper PPE and safety measures to a 27 year old electrical engineer is dangerous. He's not a medical professional, nor is he trained border staff.
And if anyone thinks ship crew straight from the Phillipines give a shit about our Covid response, they can think again.

The blonde bumble-twat clearly has no idea what he's doing. UK to have a Claytons lockdown for a month which does what exactly?
Cases/deaths rising faster than worst predictions, etc, etc.
My advice would be to lockdown properly to level 4, allow only UK citizens to enter and they have to mandatory quarantine for 14 days in a secure facility. No-one goes to work unless essential. Stay in your family bubbles. You'll be fine all winter as long as you keep the 14 day quarantine in place.
It works.
