Crikey. I was only having chat with the wife yesterday about never wanting to go in a helicopter. Far too many famous names have died like this.

Helicopters freak me out. They seem to have a high crash ratio even compared to cars.

Seriously though, what is the crash ratio for these things? They seem way less safe than planes.

I though this was hyperbolic nonsense, but actually appears to be true:
Based on hours alone, helicopters are 85 times more dangerous than driving. ... That means it took drivers approximately 1.47 million hours to travel those 100 million miles, yielding a fatality rate of 0.054 per 100,000 hours in the car. By this measure, helicopter flying is just 27 times more dangerous than driving
fudge going in a helicopter.

Would you get in a helicopter with this man?

Yes because he can land helicopters on their side.

Just shows you how fragile life is. The dude was 41 and fit and rich, he probably thought he had 30+ years left. Yet he wakes up one morning and it's lights out before lunch time. :uhoh:

Helicopters are statistically safer than planes when engines die in flight

RIP the Legend. :(

fudge the helicopters man, they're not as safe as people think. It's like flying a car except if your car has a problem it doesn't fall out of the f**king sky. Because planes are incredibly safe people think so are the helicopters but Boeing 737 notwithstanding they're in a different league of safety.

Yup.

He has a newborn, so I doubt she was with him.

Hopefully his other daughters were also not on board.

Sounds like he flew helicopters everywhere, but never behind the controls himself.

I hope so. I mean I don't hope to value them above other peoples but the idea of a whole family being wiped out is somehow worse, even if it isn't.

Victim refused to testify at the last minute, settled for couple of million and an apology/semi confession iirc.

Accuser/victim wouldn't testify in the criminal case but received an apology and a large compensation package in the civil trial. Wonder how it would have panned out today.
