I think an abbey is used by monks or nuns, whereas a cathedral is just a big church.

If only we could just type in the question to a browser and get an answer.

A cathedral is the seat of power for a bishop. Abbeys are for rebellious orders.

To you this thread maybe boring. To me it is just another integral part of what makes up the humongous tapestry of what we know as life and humanity.

Abbey
An abbey is a complex of buildings used by members of a religious order under the governance of an abbot or abbess. It provides a place for religious activities, work, and housing of Christian monks and nuns.
Cathedral
A cathedral is a church that contains the cathedra of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese, conference, or episcopate. Churches with the function of "cathedral" are usually specific to those Christian denominations with an episcopal hierarchy, such as the Catholic, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and some Lutheran churches

An idiot, dolt, dullard or mome, in modern use, is a stupid or foolish person. It was formerly a technical term in legal and psychiatric contexts for some kinds of profound intellectual disability where the mental age is two years or less, and the person cannot guard himself or herself against common physical dangers[/quote]

Pre-reformation the head dude was an Abbot
Post-reformation the head dude has been a Dean (with one exception)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbot_of_Westminster

Ken Follett's novel "The Pillars of the Earth", while a bit long, is quite good on the subject pre-reformation.

There are many pretty women called Abbey, never met one called Cathedral, although if Mr and Mrs Edral had a daughter Catherine, it would be possible.

I've always assumed that a shed load is a load that has been shed from the back of a lorry, but it also crossed my mind that it could be a load that would fill a shed, which in the case of beer can would be a lot of beer.

The latter definition is the one I use. Ie shed-load rather than shed load

When in doubt ask a neighbour who is a retired bishop!

He came back with:

An abbey is a group of many minor buildings, a cathedral is a single, usually large and ornate, church building. A cathedral usually has a throne for the presiding Bishop.
An abbey is conducted under an abbess or an abbot while a cathedral is conducted under the denomination with an episcopal hierarchy.
An abbey is a place for nuns, monks and priests to live and worship whereas a cathedral is solely a place of worship.

He also said "Google is your friend", and "there used to be more debauchery in abbeys" :)

Westminster Abbey hasn't been an Abbey since Elizabeth I's time. Since then it's been a Collegiate Church.

Actress Dolores Hart (who had a love scene with Elvis in a movie) became a nun not too long after ... maybe not the 'hottest', but a good looking woman who became a nun.
