Exactly Cabbage and he had that thing where the refs had grown up watching the great Welsh sides and were automatically inclined to give them extremely dodgy decisions. That and the corruption

But he’s caused so much hurt, Andy. So much. Best he stays where he is and attempts to drag standards up down there.

Have read different things that it's not actually Gatland who does much of the hands on day-to-day coaching. Have that, NZ hicks.

He’s nothing without Rob Howley and Shaun Edwards.

How old do you think the refs are that they can possibly have grown up watching great Welsh sides?

All those clips of Gareth Edwards on a loop during the 90's as all the 5 nations teams were so shite. The guy must have made a fortune on the after dinner circuit. Anyway stop covering up Welsh corruption that culminated in Rob Howley being asked to leave the Welsh camp and the triads then hushing World rugby up

He’s on track for fifth. A quarter final spot or one spot shy of the semi finals if there were any. You know, if they were the same competitions.

Remember those heady days of a mere 6 weeks ago, when naki was wondering whether a Chiefs victory would officially count as a first Super Rugby title for the Taranaki region? Good times, good times.

Has last in the NZ conference ever made the quarters?

Conference system may have prevented it. Has last in NZ ever had the points required?

I doubt last would ever have had the points. From memory the Crusaders came fourth in the NZ conference (6th overall on the table) a few years ago but missed out when the top South African side, with a point less than them, took the spot as a conference winner.

Gatland's teams may lose on the scoreboard each week but at least they consistently win the moral victory.

This current run reminds me a lot of a couple of times during the Wales era whereby the team went through periods of multiple close losses. Of the 6 games so far, the Cheifs have lost by less than one score in 4 of the games, 8 points in another one, and only the Blues game did they not get within a reasonable winning position.

The reasons, in my opinion, are identical to those Wales periods as well. The current Cheifs team are wanting for quality in a few key positions, and its killing them. In particular, if they just had a one more quality front rower, lock and 10, they'd be doing a hell of a lot better. When you're lacking that odd one or two quality players, it means multi-phase gameplay makes you more predictable, and you're never quite able to finish off all the odd breaks you make. Essentially, the longer things go on, the more chance someone average will get their hands on the ball and fudge things up.

I'd be happy if the Warriors played with as much heart and still lost each week. Gats has done alright with arguably the worst NZ Super squad. No shame losing respectfully each week in the toughest Rugby competition in the world BAR NONE

People were talking up the chiefs prior lockdown, almost saying they were title contenders, this the same team that beat the Crusaders early in the year mind.

As mentioned above they were viewed as serious contenders at the start of the season and the bookies odds reflected that at the time too. No idea which squads you're looking at? :?

Agreed about their tight forwards but their issue in the backs isn't 10 but a lack of quality in the centers and wings. When ALB has been injured it's been Tupaea and Tumua Manu in midfield and they are ITM cup standard at best. And it's the same story on the wing with Wainui and ENS. Stevenson and Alaimalo have been injured, and the supporting cast just hasn't been up to it.

Agreed about 10, and Jeff is right about the tight-five - their is a huge Retallick-shaped hole in the middle of it, and even lacking solid toilers like Ardron has been noticeable. It would be nice to have a fit Ta'avao available but I doubt he would be as much of a game changer.

We're as well-served at 10 as anyone else in the comp that isn't the Crusaders. Cruden can still direct a team, DMac (when his pack is going forward) can operate well as a first-receiver, and Trask - evidence to the contrary this weekend - is on a par with most young 10s in the comp.

Bring Back Big Bad Brodie

Very enjoyable game, but tough luck (again) Chiefs supporters!

I thought they might be on the way to a hiding when the Blues scored those first two tries in quick succession, heads might go down, etc., but impressive how they fought their way back in it, took the lead and almost brought it home.

They are at 8 if we go back to the pre-covid tournament. Other than that, Gatland has them flying.

The NZ Super squads obviously. Others opinions on the merits of the Chiefs are irrelevant to my opinion that the Chiefs have the weakest squad. Pretty sure 1/3rd of the squad are Super Rugby rookies and without Brodie Rettalick they don't have a single starting AB.

You don’t consider Sam Cane to be a starting AB?

Well technically he isn't. He came off the bench in the last and most important test of 2019. I think Foster might have painted himself into a corner by prematurely naming Cane as AB captain.
