Wallabies 2020 thread
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Very harsh to say Valentini was dropped due to poor performance. Yeah he had a shocking drop, but he was otherwise solid in a short tine period.
The lineout needed bolstering, Hannigan and Wright are great in the lineout. You lose a bit of starch, but it's an understandable tradeoff.
Wright has been training at 8 In case he needs to cover there.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Yeah. All things considered, I think these tweaks make sense.
I’m not 100% sure that chopping and changing your hooker will help the lineout (combinations blah blah) but he knkws what he’s doing so I’ll give Rennie the benefit of the doubt

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
He’s busy at the breakdown. Maybe not the strongest but he moves bodies non stop. It’s what we need, clean outs clean outs clean outs. He’s good for that and the lineout.
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
BPA, whatever his faults, always puts huge passionate performances when he's in Gold. He was electric on the left touchline for QLD this season too.
Can't always hit the broad side of a barn, but we had that with Faainga last week anyway.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
I'm thinking maybe Nic White will be expected to cleanout at the breakdown, and Hanigan drops to halfback?

One good thing that the Saffers have done and that is to unite the ANZACs once again.

Interesting that the 2020 Super Rugby Au champions have the same number of starters as pitiful Tahs. Team of champions etc etc.

Samu plays in a position (or positions, more accurately) where there is strong competition for places.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Samu didn't aim up last week when he was expected to. Rennie doesn't tolerate shirkers and that is why he isn't there. Don't expect Rennie to be like Deans or Chieka, he doesn't play mind games like them and knows how to get the best out of all his players.
i think a few Wallabies lack a few ball playing skills or are so indoctrinated with the old Oz rugby coaching methods of predictable rugby (which starts from schoolboy rugby) that they are struggling to play the game Rennie wants. They need to be able to think on the fly especially in counter attack. he will get them playing good rugby over time.
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
That might be true, but it’s a bit harsh to judge them on one game, in a swirling rainstorm, where the ABs also dropped a lot of ball.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Take aways from that?
I'm dissapointed in the Wallabies performance, but not outrageoulsy so. They showed some guts and hints of promise. It's still a chance we could win two in Australia, although it's slim.
First, why is Rennie taking our best players off so early? We all know Tupou can play 80. Taking him off at half time seems premature. Likewise I think we're losing a lot subbing Matt Phillip for Simmons so early on.
Big Ned Hanigan can hold his head up. Thankfully he didn't make me look silly. He hit the rucks well, played with his usual motor, made a crucial turn-over and was unlucky not to get two, plus a nice break.
The lineout was still wobbly. Both weeks it seemd to sure up when Uelese came on. Has he earned a start? Rennie has showed signs that he's ruthless with selections, so I wouldn't be surprised.
Paisami failed to repeat last week's heroics, but Petia came on and showed glimpses of what he's capable of with limited time. Again a possible start for Petia on the cards next game.
Jake Gordon was solid when he came on, and although White was man-of-the-match last week, the swirling wind suited his strengths. I feel in more stable conditions Gordon brings more.
Banks has been decent but not outstanding two games in a row. Probably not enough to get dropped, but to be honest, as unpopular as this is bound to be, maybe Hodge should get a start? He brings the threat of a penalty anywhere within 65m+, he's a much bigger body, and in the time he's been given hasn't played any worse than Banks.

When is the Argies' warmup game? Give some uncapped Wobs squad guys like Hosea and Lolesio a hit out.
For Bled III, Toomua should be rested. I'd be tempted to put JOC at 12 and have Brumbie halves: 10. Lolesio; 9.White/Powell
The pack in Bled II weren't good enough ... some changes + try some new blood before reaching a dead rubber ...
Bled III:
1 Slipper
2 BPA
3 Tupou
4 Philip
5 Hosea
6 LSL
7 Hooper
8 Wilson
9 Powell
10 Lolesio
11 Koroibete
12 JOC
13 Petaia
14 Daugunu
15 DHP
16 Uelese
17 Sio
18 AAA
19 Simmons
20 Samu
21 White
22 Hodge
23 Paisami

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Koro has to go. He looks all at sea unless he’s got the white line in sight, and when he did, he didn’t complete
Let’s try Tom Wright
JOC needs a kick up the ass as well. I’d try Simone for a game.
And we need to sort out the front row. Tupou playing half a game is a waste of strikepower
Same for Wilson, who I’ve always rated.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
No chance. He’s been our best for so long. He did some good things and botched a few today. It’s easily fixed.
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
I think we have the ABs twice in a row first up in Oz
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
A lot will depend on Toomua.
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Absolutely. Depending on how Toomua scrubs up might be an opportunity to introduce Lolesio?
Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Toomua would be lucky to be ready in 2 weeks I reckon
Have to give Lolesio a go.
JOC turned into a headless chook there for a while. Very disturbing. Would be good to have a second playmaker.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Koro just took a look twice and spilled the pill. Unlike him. Then was stripped when we were on attack.
A lot of mistakes and missed tackles. Not sure how Rennie deals with that. I reckon he would be giving Latu a call, maybe Skelton or Rodda as well. We need to be more accurate all around.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
If Rennie is consistent then you won't see Koroibete, Liam Wright or Banks next game...
Although for the latter, it might depend on DHP's fitness.
And it's time to see what Lolesio's got.
The kid outplayed both Toomua and JOC this year, and the Wallaby attack is going nowhere.
JOC looks slippery when he runs with the ball, but his kicking in general play has been poor all year.
If Toomua is out I'd throw Lolesio straight into the starting team...
fudge it, I'd throw Lolesio in regardless at the expense of either Toomua or JOC.
Although not going to make a lick of difference if we don't fix up our efficiency at the breakdown and defence...

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Arguable, for sure... but how many personnel changes? What priority?
If Toomua is out ... then one of the two "almost there" playmakers is gone (plus a solid defender).
Lolesio is the future playmaker. It would be ideal to be newly capped against an underdone Pumas instead of the aura-restored ABs, but if he is needed now then a 10/12 Noah+JOC might be the go.
And with the backline defence looking turnstile today, I'd probably want Kuridrani to add some starch against the likes of Clarke. Unfortunately, TK has been sent to Coventry.
Is Wright and/or Simone that enforcer? Dunno. Maybe Petaia plays wing.
Koro seemed like he was playing a "concussed game" today (although I don't recall any knock). Irretrieivably in the departure lounge - or just a bad game?
Nah, Tupou can play extra long in soup ... but against a Tier 1 test side in the front row (and when being used as a battering ram) he can't match the same minutes. 50 instead of 40 maybe.
Wilson perhaps could have gone a tad longer. Was value when out there.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
Fair enough. I agree with those comments.
The breakdown is definitely a mess. One that Hanigan and Wright were meant to solve.
Perhaps we need to change the tactics. No one makes a break without letting potential support runners know in writing, first.

Re: Wallabies 2020 thread
I don't know how to solve the breakdown. We need moar grunt but it's not in abundance.
Backs-wise, you might still be on the money with say:
10. Lolesio/JOC
12. Simone
22. JOC/Lolesio
I'll throw up:
13. Kuridrani

14. Petaia
