Ireland V Italy - Postponed?

Post by Duff Paddy »

They took foot and mouth more seriously. I think they might consider postponing it now that the coronavirus has taken hold in Milan. That said, the idea of being able to contain this virus is laughable.

Maybe, maybe not. Regardless, preventing thousands of tourists from all over Europe converging on one spot where there's been an outbreak is hardly an idea without any warrant.

A band I'm seeing next week are in Italy at the moment and posted at lunch time about their Milan date being cancelled, with the situation uncertain about other shows this week. Certainly wouldn't be surprised to see the game postponed.

house prices in nicer areas of Dublin could drop a bit. Potential win-win if they play the game.

Yeah think they’d have to call it now. Insurance would kick in but still a lot of money down the drain

Could they move it to Rome or some other big stadium in a city where the virus isn't so prevalent? They'd have enough time to sort out the logistics, but I guess they'll want to discourage large movements of people within the country.

Some good news though, in the professional opinion of the department of foreign affairs there is little or no chance of Ireland’s back three, Sexton or Murray catching it.

Indeed. But coronavirus only affects people, not agricultural profits...

A fair bit of China has been shut down - Wuhan is a big supplier of goods for the outside world.
And parts - spare or otherwise.

The impact on the Supply Chain for international firms will be hitting soon enough.

It already is. We're starting to see shortages in IT components across the board

I dunno. Italy gets around 65 million tourists a year. Putting the kaibosh on the travelling support for a six nations game would hardly scratch the surface in terms of containment or transmission.

Having said that, if players or fans would prefer not to risk it, I can understand where they're coming from.

Especially firms that have a lot of sourcing from China.
If you have little or no exposure then it’s time to clean up.

Sadly when these pandemics hit it shows just how fragile and inter reliant the world is. Thanos would be happy though.

Play it in London? Think I read somewhere that Mayor of London is offering London as the site for the Olympics if a virus pandemic deters Tokyo.

Exactly, it clearly states that the home team must receive the away team in ALL circumstances, If the IRU cancel the game for fear of a few bugs, then game Italy.

The real goal is surely just to slow it down enough that a vaccine is created, or effective antivirals are found before massive death disruption occurs.
All efforts in that direction are useful.

There were games in October the last time the Irish gov. stopped 6N games from going ahead.
Think the England game in Italy might be more under threat.
