It's still going to be a very strong team, a lot of whom will be able to build on their experience from 4 years ago.

Scrum-half is the only real 'problem' area.

I would LOVE it if Cips went and played himself into the test spot at 10. Like, Kevin Keegan LOVE it.

Well, yeah
It’s like some people don’t want to win.
They made exactly the same complaints for the tour to Oz and NZ. Mainly the Irish and Scots saying they wanted more. Its become a pre Lions tour ritual now.

It'll be interesting as he's (Gatland) no longer bound to the WRU and nor will he have to front up to Welsh players after the tour. Not to mention Wales might be riding the end of a few influential players' careers. My guess is lots of English, almost as many Irish, and a smattering of Welsh and Scottish players. I can't wait. Should be great. Gatland will want to erase the 2009 memory I would think. I think he'll be able to cobble together a side that will compete well.

He complained about how rough the Welsh Premiership is so not sure he’s a guy suited to taking on some of the hardest bastards in rugby.

Fair to say that the squad would appear to have good depth at backrow, LH, Locks and back 3? Seem to be a few decent options at each of those.

TH not bad either. Centres pretty good too, not Nonu/Smith class but won't let the side down imho.

He has not played much after over a year off with a potentially career ending injury. Interesting that he played for a long time in pain so it is likely that he is only now starting to show what he is capable of.

This is a really interesting article about long term injury and what it can do to a player. Ben Atiga is forging a really good reputation on the mental health side of rugby, and also creating a 'home from home' environment for the overseas players so they acclimatise quickly and only have to worry about the rugby.

As a non Scottish man I’d agree that Sutherland is strongly in contention. I can see him traveling with Mako and Genge

On a separate note re squad size , wasn’t it a 40 man traveling party last time?

I think that it's a tour too far for AWJ and he won't be in the top 6 locks by that time. Having said that it's Gatland..........

This will be a great tour.

Dominator Dombrandt will announce himself to the world like Big Lol did in ‘97.

It’s going to be beautiful.

Would love to see Hamish Watson make the squad. Unfortunately for him competition is fierce at 7 with Curry and Tipuric, possibly Leavy too.

Also Hamish Watson doesn’t stand a chance to get picked but the Scottish 6 id love to see tour and dovetail Underhill etc.

You need a hard bastard who’s gnarly, mobile and tough. He was good at the World Cup too.

I don’t rate him tbh, but Gatland will likely want a massive centre running into saffer brick walls in midweek games

I reckon he'll take Navidi to cover that role. However, I wouldn't complain if Watson went instead.

Jamie Ritchie is the Scotish 6 / 7 - he's certainly mobile & disruptive - but not sure if he's physical enough to play 6 for the Lions. You're gonna need a genuine 6 for South Africa - someone hard as nails who will be dominant in the tackle. I'd say Wainwright is in with a shout if he finds form again - Gatland clearly rates him as well.

He has hardly played any Pro 14 anyway.

I agree re Ritchie, in with a real shout. Still pretty young so another season should see him improving.

Genge seems to be getting picked a lot without having really done very much. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the guy, but he is still very new and only getting a few minutes here and there.
