I agree. That is the shittest news possible. Rugby will die a slow death if that occurs. It's live game exposure will be 1/20th of it's peak audiences now.

Nope. In fact most English posters were against or skeptical of the CVC bid if you bothered to engage with them on it.

Because there isn't enough top jobs in Cricket to use them all up.

On the plus side we'll finally be shot of the BBC punditry shower - apologies to BCM, formerly of this parish.

That is, unless Sky decide to stick the cherry on top of this shitpile and hires them. :-(

We had our World Cup coverage behind a paywall. If you wanted it, you paid and got on with it.

If you don't want to watch, you wont.

And aren't New Zealand male rugby numbers shrinking?

This is bad. Short term money for long term decline.

Will he? A lot of England fans/Northern Hemisphere fans are fans via their local club culturally. If it isn't on free TV many fans simply head down their local club to watch, and if it's on the TV there they'll catch-up with the professional game.

Six nations should be one of those protected species like the FA Cup final, Wimbledon and the Olympics that must always be free to air

Remember it used to be the whole of Wimbledon that was protected, now it's just the final. However the current organisers of Wimbledon know for them and their sponsors free TV provides a bigger platform for them and there is more to gain from the cultural big event idea of Wimbledon being access by the whole country than throwing it behind a paywall for a quick buck.

Wasn't the 6 Nations Tournament sold last year? That was the precursor to this.

This debate has existed amongst other sports for years. Boxing used to be more of a 'mainstream' sport until it moved from free to air TV to PPV, etc, and now it's more of sporting subculture.

I didn't know there were still places on earth that still had free-to-air rugby coverage.

Double-edged sword for NZ. The money is needed but the interest of the wider community in the sport now only coalesces around the All Blacks and tbh this only really happens on a national scale at world cup time nowadays. It's even worse in Austraia from my short time here. I feel lack of free-to-air coverage has played a part in this.

For what? What's the money gonna be spent on? And yeah blazers new cars whatever. But the millions this brings in, where does that go?

THe English clubs are pulling back from the wage inflation madness. The French are adoption the JIFF rules to increase local talent. WTAF is going on? I could maybe accept this if it was part of a plan to expand the game, maybe make a fund to support relegted teams in a new 6 nations and invest in the tier below.

The WR proposal had keeping the 6Ns on FTA as a central theme. Which would have been much better than what's likely about to occur. Instead of listening to CVC the 6Ns Unions should have negotiated an expanded format for the Nations Championship that would have eliminated the relegation aspect. Oh well...

Yes. We go to the pub. Same dynamic. Everyone pays... we want to watch the games, right?
We just cancelled our SKY subscription. Looks like I'll be streaming most games but I'm sure a few will be down the pub.

You won't have to it's protected so there will be Significant coverage on free to Air.

I still TOTALLY oppose Sky having it. but would be fine if BT did.

Think Wales home matches at least are protected and have to be on S4C

I defo won't get a sports subscription just for 6N and that is all I'd be using it for.

Short term thinking. Giving up £100 in the future to make £10 now.

It’s not protected, which seems bit daft really.

It captures the imagination in Wales in a special way, like having a World Cup every year. Millions will watch, who might not necessarily always tune in to club action, and their interest is vital in terms of the growth and future of the sport.

That's a shame. Yeah, definitely but who cares about little not a country Wales when there is money to be made.

Despite the efforts of the Welsh Assembly, I think the WRU have actively opposed the 6N being given Group A protected status.

The 6N body did similar.

I suspect there is an inevitability about this because I think rugby’s actual finances are toilet.

Welcome to IRB/WR's vision for making the game global.

Happy to be wrong, but I can’t readily find info on this and what it means. Heard an interview with Gareth Edwards llast year where he said it isn't but should be.
