I'm thinking about this, but have to come to Jack Black's defence ... ONLY when given these sorts of roles.

I think it was he and Seth Green that had small parts as annoying tech nerds in that Will Smith / Gene Hackman movie ... Enemy of the State? In small doses, doing what they do, they can provide some variety ... as leads, nah.

Is this about the way the act/roles they play on screen? Or how they are or portray themselves in real life?

Been watching School of Rock with my 6 year old daughter and Jack Black is great.

I can't stand Tom Cruise, but he generally makes some fine filums that I tend to watch.

More about the characters they play I suppose. But Liz Hurley is just a shit actress

Jack Black irritated the shit out of me in The Holiday. Sometimes one feels another (any other) actor could have played the role better

I was wondering if anyone else would say him? I was thinking that while I liked the MI films, but was conflicted in not giving a rats if Ethan died at any point. :)

Fortunately Schwimmer doesn't get many roles. But yes, Nicolas Cage is such a poor actor. Virtually any other actor could have played his roles better

This is a distractingly bitchy thread I am well up for.

Keira Knightley
Daniel Craig
Alan Cummings

There are so many I'll have to add more when they come to me. It's cathartic.

1. Who acres about her acting? (weirdly she was decent before she got famous. Possibly I was distracted as she was frequently nude in her early career.)
2. Yeah, fine in the Hangover movies, but the least funny character there.
3. Which Baldwin is he?
4. He's been great in many roles, though his mugging can become to much.

I get that people like his insanity and maybe it suits many of the roles, but I just am not a fan.

Schwimmer made Lt Sobel such a hated character in BoB, but I don't think he was acting much. :) I've read both BoB and Winters' autobio... I did wonder if the real man was less whiny and just an unforgiving prick?

Paul Dano is a really good shout!

Yeah. I don't quite get the movie appeal of any of the friends cats, they all play the same role in the same tone over and over. They are all kinda one note. Monica was good in the Scream movies though. To be fair at least Schwimmer has stretched himself in what roles he has played.

Craig - I preferred the Danish version, with subtitles, of The Girl with the dragon tattoo. That's how much I dislike him

The middle one I think. The younger brother only gets roles because he's related to Alec

I despise Will Ferrell. He's made one film that I genuinely enjoyed (The Other Guys) and did his best to ruin that. His whole schtick leaves me actively annoyed and I can't fathom why people find him funny. Seems the world's coming round to my way of thinking as a lot of his recent films have been slated with diminishing box office returns.

Swedish.

Also, the original is a cracking film that had no need to be remade. Disliking Craig is the least of the reasons to prefer it to the Yank version.

I like Swinton, she's such a unique individual. But I've not liked her as much since her being a major hollywood actor.

Thinking of my own lists, it's more that some actors had periods I couldn't stand them. Jim Carrey I liked as a kid, but his samey acting role grew grating, Trueman Show an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind aside. However he was immense in Kick Ass 2 which was otherwise a shite film. But now he's barely in anything I can enjoy stuff like Liar Lair.

I actually dislike Brad Pitt in any historical setting, especially if he is staring a lot. Somehow he is always dull as ditchwater if he isn't in a modern setting. I think Le DiCaprio went to utter shite for some years after Titanic but recovered over time.

Swedish. Danish. All sounds Greek to me. But yes, the original was a great movie

Good call on Will Ferrell. Irritating as shit and can't act to save his life

Will Farrell and Ben Stiller are the kinds where I see 4 very annoying and bad performances then they will knoc one out the park. With Farrell we have Anchorman and Old School as particular gems.

Adam Sandler is another one, in the 90's he had a string of very funny movies, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy. All superb comedies. Then since 2000 we have 50 First dates and the excellent 'Don't mess with the Zohan' as his good films in 20 years.

I know it’s all ‘cool’, ‘hip’ and ‘wizard’ to claim that a fillum you dislike is ‘the worst film in the world’ but I’m sure there is a metric available which proves, scientifically, that Ferrell’s ‘Holmes and Watson’ flick is actually the worst film in the world.

The revisionism is hilarious. His back catalogue is immense. You've only to see how weak the last series of House of Cards was to understand how much gravitas he brings.

Swiming with Sharks, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Usual Suspects, Se7en, Outbreak, A Time to Kill, L.A. Confidential, The Negotiator, American Beauty. I don't think his 2000's onwards film work was as strong, largely due to the fact he was a Theatre director who helped bring back the Old Vic. But that is a ridiculously good set of classic films he acted in.
